Backpropagation (backprop) is arguably the most transformative algorithm in the history of modern machine learning. Its simplicity and generality have enabled today’s AI revolution. Backprop remains the workhorse because it provides a universal recipe for credit assignment: use the chain rule to propagate error derivatives from outputs back through every layer of the model, adjusting weights to minimize a global objective.
