What the UN learned when it paid refugees using blockchain technology

Every month at UN Women’s Oasis centers in Zaatari and Azraq refugee camps, something deeply inefficient happened. Staff set up a queuing system. They checked IDs one by one. They verified salary amounts. Then they handed out envelopes of cash one at a time to refugee women enrolled in incentive-based volunteering programs, also known as cash-for-work. This was not just slow. It was expensive.
