Defense attorneys said some of the state’s charges would be unconstitutional following the federal pleas. Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial set to start next month in New York City was postponed indefinitely on Aug. 17 after he pleaded guilty to two federal charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Judge Gregory Carro issued a brief order after lawyers for Mangione petitioned the court to throw out the case on double jeopardy grounds before the Sept. 8 trial started.
