Daily market update: Bakkavor, ITV, Premier Foods, B&M, Watches of Switzerland | Thursday 15 May 2025
“A big pullback in oil prices weighed on markets across Europe,” says Russ Mould, Investment Director at AJ Bell. “Traders focused on the prospect of a US/Iran nuclear deal which could see economic sanctions lifted on the latter and potentially lead to greater supplies of oil. That weighed on shares in BP and Shell which pulled down the FTSE 100. Commodities trader Glencore was also weak.
Daily market update: Reckitt, ITV, Pepco, Melrose Industries | Thursday 06 Mar 2025
“The FTSE 100 slumped on Thursday despite mining stocks enjoying strong gains on hopes of a reprieve on tariffs and expectations China will launch a big stimulus package,” says AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould. “The UK’s flagship index was dragged lower as several big names traded without the right to their next dividend and some corporate results disappointed.

Markets weak after US tech sell-off, Centrica profit ‘normalises’, ITV’s Euros boost wasn’t enough, Nissan slumps and Anglo American announces further UK mine write-down | Thursday 25 Jul 2024
“Wednesday’s big slump in tech stocks saw US indices endure their worst session since 2022,” says AJ Bell Investment Analyst Dan Coatsworth. “The weakness bled into Asian trading sessions on Thursday and prompted a slow start in Europe too, although the FTSE 100’s limited exposure to technology likely spared it from larger losses.
Markets static ahead of UK rate decision, Airbnb tumbles on Q2 outlook, Arm sold off on soft outlook and ITV hit by writers’ strike delays | Thursday 09 May 2024
“It’s common to see markets freeze ahead of an interest rate decision and that’s exactly what’s happened in the UK,” says Russ Mould, Investment Director at AJ Bell. “While the Bank of England isn’t expected to cut or raise rates, investors are waiting nervously for the accompanying commentary and vote split as that could provide clues as to what could happen next. With such a big event on the horizon, it’s only natural that investors sit on their hands until they get the information.

“The FTSE 100 may have recovered from the lows seen in late October, as investors react positively to the latest decisions and noises from central banks, but it is stopping short of a full-blown rally for now,” says AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould. “The index is flat, despite more gains in the US overnight, and the debate continues to oscillate between higher rates for longer and the prospect of rate cuts in 2024.

FTSE struggles, CRH plans switch to US listing, Tesla investor day underwhelms and ITV hit by advertising slowdown | Thursday 02 Mar 2023
“With a plethora of companies reporting today in the UK, it’s all about the numbers and the outlook statements for investors. Sadly, the likes of Flutter, Schroders, Haleon and Taylor Wimpey get sufficiently weak scores from the judging panel that the FTSE 100 is anchored to the floor,” says Russ Mould, Investment Director at AJ Bell. “Bid chatter about Macquarie potentially lining up a takeover bid for M&G didn’t trigger a rally in the target’s share price.

“It might be stretching things to say love is in the air when it comes to the stock market, but the FTSE 100 is mounting a Valentine’s Day push toward the 8,000 level,” says AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould. “All eyes will be fixed on Washington later as the US Bureau of Labor Statistics posts inflation numbers for January.
