Given both the ongoing expansion of world population and development of climate change conditions, the global society has been striving to find alternative routes for energy production, which will allow establishment of a flourishing and sustainable bioeconomy. As a naturally occurring non-fossil organic material with potential to offset fossil fuel emissions, biomass has currently been one of the most widespread forms of renewable energy [1], [2], [3].
Ultrasmall Iron oxide nanoparticles have recently attracted much attention as T (positive) contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging to serve as safer alternatives to gadolinium-based T contrast agents. This review will discuss several key aspects regarding this newly developed contrast agent, including synthetic strategies, parameters affecting T signal (e.g., size, surface, and environment), and emerging applications.
