Enhancing bosonic qubit protection by squeezing
Abstract Bosonic qubits implement error correction by harnessing the high-dimensional Hilbert space of a harmonic oscillator to redundantly encode logical quantum information. Squeezing of quantum states — a cornerstone of precision metrology — redistributes uncertainty between conjugate quadratures to enhance sensitivity in one variable at the expense of the other.

Broad-spectrum anti-inflammatory and antioxidant therapy of inflammatory-storm actuated diseases via programmable self-derived cryo-dead neutrophils
Inflammatory response is a universal phenomenon that occurs in nearly all diseases and involves several key processes, such as immune cell activation, inflammatory mediator (e.g., pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines) release, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation [1]. Inflammation is usually caused by infection, trauma, etc., and is often recognized as a beneficial defense response that promotes clearance of pathogenic microorganisms and tissue repair [2].
Discovery of 7-alkoxybenzofurans as PDE4 inhibitors with hepatoprotective activity in D-GalN/LPS-induced hepatic sepsis
Introduction Sepsis, the life-threatening organ dysfunction in critically ill patients, is caused by the abnormal response to infection. [1] Among sepsis cases (about 31.5 million globally) and severe sepsis cases (19.4 million globally), there are 5.3 million deaths each year.
Autoparametric Resonance Extending the Bit-Flip Time of a Cat Qubit up to 0.3 s
Popular Summary The fragility of quantum systems hinders the promise of practical quantum computing, but quantum error correction offers a promising way forward. The use of bosonic modes as quantum bits could considerably lower the number of qubits needed for such correction. One notable example is the cat qubit, based on quantum superpositions of two classical states of light.
Novel ligustilide derivatives target quorum sensing system LasR/LasB and relieve inflammatory response against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection
Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common pathogen that induces acute and chronic infections through the production of virulence factors and the formation of biofilms [[1], [2], [3]]. In addition to producing virulence factors and biofilms, they employ various mechanisms to reduce the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments, leading to uncontrolled and persistent inflammation. This, in turn, imposes a substantial economic burden on health-care systems worldwide [4].
Statistical and agent-based modelling of the transmissibility of different SARS-CoV-2 variants in England and impact of different interventions
Open AccessResearch articles Abstract The English SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has been affected by the emergence of new viral variants such as B.1.177, Alpha and Delta, and changing restrictions. We used statistical models and the agent-based model Covasim, in June 2021, to estimate B.1.177 to be 20% more transmissible than the wild type, Alpha to be 50–80% more transmissible than B.1.177 and Delta to be 65–90% more transmissible than Alpha.
Partisan pandemic: How partisanship and public health concerns affect individuals’ social mobility during COVID-19
Abstract Rampant partisanship in the United States may be the largest obstacle to the reduced social mobility most experts see as critical to limiting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

$5.1 million invested in genome engineering at Concordia University
“Practically every component of milk is used for something in dairy processing,” explains Vincent Martin, professor of biology and Concordia University Research Chair in Microbial Engineering and Synthetic Biology. “For milk, cream, cheese, protein concentrate — all of the dairy product is going somewhere.” Lactose, however, is one important by-product not used much, Martin adds.
Concordia University History professor to lead the transnational investigation into the consequences of working-class job loss in the West
Twenty-four researchers and dozens of partner organizations will collaborate on an investigation into deindustrialization and its political consequences. The project, Deindustrialization and the Politics of our Time, will be based at Concordia University’s Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling under the direction of Steven High, professor in the Department of History and founder of the Centre.
Divergent consensuses on Arctic amplification influence on midlatitude severe winter weather
Abstract The Arctic has warmed more than twice as fast as the global average since the late twentieth century, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification (AA). Recently, there have been considerable advances in understanding the physical contributions to AA, and progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms that link it to midlatitude weather variability. Observational studies overwhelmingly support that AA is contributing to winter continental cooling.
Cairo consensus on the IVF laboratory environment and air quality: report of an expert meeting
Some evidence shows that the ability to culture human embryos in an ART facility to the blastocyst stage is reduced by a select group of contaminants.
Nonnegative Tensor CP Decomposition of Hyperspectral Data
New hyperspectral missions will collect huge amounts of hyperspectral data. In addition, it is possible now to acquire time series and multiangular hyperspectral images. The process and analysis of these big data collections will require common hyperspectral techniques to be adapted or reformulated. The tensor decomposition, which is also known as multiway analysis, is a technique to decompose multiway arrays, i.e., hypermatrices with more than two dimensions (ways).
Special Issue: Communication in Science: Pressures and Predators
As a service to the community, AAAS is making these articles free to the public. As scientific publishing has become a growth industry, the standards for scientific communication are slipping. The science community must explore new ways to improve upon them. The accelerating pace of scientific publishing and the rise of open access, as depicted by xkcd.com cartoonist Randall Munroe. How Much Science is There? A new paper is published roughly every 20 seconds.
