Aronia melanocarpa pomace enhances egg production and quality in late-laying hens via modulating gut microbiota and lipid metabolism
ABSTRACT 1. This study investigated the effects of Aronia melanocarpa pomace (AP) supplementation on serum variables, egg quality, laying performance, nutrient utilisation and gut microflora in late-stage laying hens. 2. A total of 288 Hy-Line Brown hens (60 weeks old) were randomly allocated to one of four groups: a control (basal) or the basal diet supplemented with either 1% AP (APL), 2% AP (APM), or 3% AP (APH) for 20 weeks. Each group contained six replicates of 12 hens. 3.
Iron metabolism interference-enhanced sonodynamic therapy of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus-induced osteomyelitis by CaCO3-Ga-PPIX@PEG nanospheres
Osteomyelitis is a bone infection disease caused by trauma, surgery, or the spread of a tissue infection [1]. Osteomyelitis usually locates in deep sites and is prone to recurrence. Infected bone tissues are difficult to heal and may lead to amputation [2]. Traditional treatment methods for osteomyelitis typically involve high-dose antibiotics and surgical debridement [2a, 3]. However, excessive use of antibiotics may lead to bacterial resistance and serious side effects [4].

Environmental factors shaping the gut microbiome in a Dutch population - Nature
Abstract The gut microbiome is associated with diverse diseases1,2,3, but a universal signature of a healthy or unhealthy microbiome has not been identified, and there is a need to understand how genetics, exposome, lifestyle and diet shape the microbiome in health and disease. Here we profiled bacterial composition, function, antibiotic resistance and virulence factors in the gut microbiomes of 8,208 Dutch individuals from a three-generational cohort comprising 2,756 families.
Single-scan, dual-functional interferometer for fast spatio-temporal characterization of few-cycle pulses
Abstract Accurate and fast characterization of spatio-temporal information of high-intensity, ultrashort pulses is crucial in the field of strong-field laser science and technology.

A phase III clinical trial of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery versus surgery alone for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus
Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy followed by surgery seems to hopefully improve the survival of locally advanced ESCC. Nevertheless, the results of different studies were inconsistent. We are to carry out a phased III clinical trial to investigate the effect of this multidisciplinary therapy for the overall survival of patients with locally advanced ESCC.
Loughborough University
February 2, 2012 | General Technology | Loughborough University We discuss BioThreads, a novel, configurable, extensible system-on-chip multiprocessor and its use in accelerating biomedical signal processing applications such as imaging photoplethysmography (IPPG). BioThreads is derived from the LE1 open-source VLIW chip multiprocessor and efficiently handles instruction, data and thread-level parallelism.
