Study population EPIC is a multicentre cohort including participants from ten European countries (recruited in 23 centres from 1991 to 1999). Details regarding the recruitment and the collection of information on socio-demographic, lifestyle, reproductive, and dietary factors has previously been described [14]. In accordance with our previous publications examining associations of obesity with cancer risk [15, 16], we excluded 149,622 women (40.7% of all EPIC women).

Study population EPIC is an ongoing multicentric prospective study with over 500,000 men and women recruited between 1992 and 2000 from 23 centres in 10 European countries [30], originally designed to study the relationship between diet and cancer risk. Incident cancer cases were identified through a combination of methods, including health insurance records, cancer and pathology registries, and active follow-up through study participants and their next-of-kin.
