In 1925, Harry K. Johnson Sr., a real-estate developer, purchased 7,800 acres of land which surrounded the original town of Highlands. At that time, the land was occupied with fig orchards, corn fields, cotton fields, strawberries and blackberry fields. In 1927, Johnson built a railroad and operated an Interurban Transportation Services to Highlands and the Tri-Cities. It played a huge part in transportation between McNair and Houston, especially during the 1930s and 1940s.

February 28, 2026, marked the 21st anniversary of the passing of Mr. Robert Lee Goree, Sr. of McNair. Thursday, February 25, 2026, marks the 18th death anniversary of Robert Harris of McNair, Texas. Robert Harris, 82, was a longtime resident of the once self-sufficient all-Black community of McNair.
