What was your first job as a journalist?

I was hired as a part-time writer for a local TV station while studying journalism at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I thought I was badass when I moved from a manual typewriter to an IBM Selectric!

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read widely. Ask Questions. Become a good listener. Treat sources as you wish people would treat you.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That South Texas and its border with Mexico is a dangerous place for locals who do not engage in illegal activities.
