Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Writing intern at The Times Record in Brunswick, Maine.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope. But they are gorgeous.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To engage with the wider world; to be curious, scrutinizing and analytical; to set the record straight and pursue the truth in all the noise.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, always.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Premiere (occasionally Avid, though never FCX), Davinci Resolve, import.io, Evernote, Tor, Excel, Tableau, Google Refine, among many others.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter, despite its flaws.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I loved the idea of a job that allows me to experience others' lives; that I could learn about something new every day.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

There was not a high school newspaper at my school...

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

At the moment -- "Uninsured," about health care for undocumented immigrants in New York City.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime. Email, day or night.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

PR spam emails. I covered Bonnaroo twice in college and get constant emails about talk show appearances ever since.

What's your favorite drink?

Red eye, depending on the time of day. An occasional Old Fashioned or hard cider or Maine beer.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Out in rural Hancock County, Maine, with my camera.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

ProPublica. Reveal. The Intercept. The Marshall Project. I have a thing for nonprofit investigative digital news outlets, apparently.
