Interview: Jackie Marsh
Professor of education at the University of Sheffield, and chair of the DfE’s expert panel, which has accredited apps for home learning on the Hungry Little Minds website. This gives parents access to video tips, advice and suggested games to help with early learning for their children from birth to five. WHAT CRITERIA DID YOU USE WHEN CHOOSING WHICH APPS TO INCLUDE? The criteria were developed following a thorough review of the literature in this area.
The Internet of Toys: A Posthuman and Multimodal Analysis of Connected Play
by Jackie Marsh - 2017 Background: The study reported in this article focuses on an exploration of the role and nature of play in young children’s use of toys that connect physical and digital domains. The article draws on posthuman theory to explain some of the complexity of the play that occurs in these contexts.
Makerspaces in early childhood education: Principles of pedagogy and practice
As the digital age is impacting on the lives of young children, they have increasing access to a range of digital technologies in homes and communities from birth (Chaudron et al., 2015 Chaudron, S., Beutel, M. E., Černikova, M., Donoso, V., Dreier, M., Fletcher-Watson, B., & Wölfling, K. (2015). Young children (0-8) and digital technology: A qualitative exploratory study across seven countries (Joint Research Centre, European Commission Technical Report No. EUR 27052).
Play and creativity in young children's use of apps
Abstract This study is the first to systematically investigate the extent to which apps for children aged 0–5 foster play and creativity. There is growing evidence of children's use of tablets, but limited knowledge of the use of apps by children of children of this age. This ESRC‐funded study undertook research that identified how UK children aged from 0 to 5 use apps, and how far the use of apps promotes play and creativity, given the importance of these for learning and development.

a parent's guide
Mixing toddlers and touchscreens can be a tricky – not to mention sticky – situation for today’s parents. Adults often find themselves glued to their smart phones and tablet – and aren’t sure what to do when it comes to sharing those devices with their children. Should they follow the (somewhat surprising) example of Apple founder Steve Jobs, and ban them completely?
