France Fears a German Identity in Flux
In early February, Liana Fix, a German political scientist based in Washington who works for the Council on Foreign Relations, reignited an old European debate with her essay on the “German question” published in Foreign Affairs. The expert on European security and transatlantic relations warned that Berlin’s new aspiration to leadership in matters of security policy must be explained and embedded within the European context.
New European Formats Stir Old Ghosts
The founding myth of the European Union is fading. Having begun amid the continent’s self-destruction during two world wars—as the vanguard of an international community of states striving for Kant’s eternal peace—the logic of integration is increasingly turning into its opposite. Surrounded by a Darwinian “jungle” where the strongest prevail, since at least 2022 Europeans have been primarily concerned with self-preservation, defending their own continent from external threats.
Umgang mit Rechtsextremen : Wer Frankreich verstehen will, muss diese Unterschiede kennen
Frankreichs Politik wartet auf den 7. Juli.
„Frankreichs System wirkt zunehmend dysfunktional“ : Was vom Macronismus bleibt
Franco-German Cooperation on Nuclear Deterrence Needs to Start Now
Geopolitics and domestic politics are shifting in parallel. A new poll shows that 73 percent of Europeans believe that the continent must ensure its own defense. Distrust of the United States is at a record high. Against this backdrop, one would think we would be witnessing the genesis of a true European defense union, led by France and Germany. Instead, Franco-German defense cooperation is faltering.

Read more We provide an outside perspective on German decision-making and tackle misperceptions between Germany and its partners at a time of power shifts in Europe and of geopolitical realignment. By looking at German policies and policy-making from different angles, focusing on the country’s key relationships and factoring in the concerns of its neighbors and partners, we help Germany to play a positive role in constructing the future European order – and to help Europe build a brighter future.
Taking the Pulse: Does France's Political Crisis Weaken Europe's Geopolitical Hand?
Despite the many changes of government, it is still widely believed in Berlin that the French president ultimately has the decisive say in international policy—whether with regard to Ukraine, Gaza, or ongoing EU negotiations. On Monday, following outgoing Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's resignation announcement, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius commented that Macron should be given “a little space” and warned against dramatizing the situation.
MAGA and Regime Change in Europe
The process of European unification is in profound crisis. The integration process began on the old continent in the 1950s, a project designed to counteract the nationalisms of the 19th century and the ideologies of the 20th. But in the early decades of the 21st century, Europe seems to have lost faith in its own narrative of progress.

The Risks of Merz’ Debt Gamble
There were sighs of relief in European Union capitals when Friedrich Merz was declared the winner of Germany’s February 23 general election. That relief soon grew further when it became clear that his center-right Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU) and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) had won enough seats to form a coalition.

Untangling the Transatlantic Knot: Germany, France, and the United States
Donald Trump’s re-election constitutes a challenge for the two countries because both need to fundamentally rethink their respective relationships with the United States and Europe-US relations more generally. The scope of the US withdrawal from European security remains to be seen, but it will be similarly challenging for Paris and Berlin.
Untangling the Transatlantic Knot: Germany, France, and the United States
France’s and Germany’s reactions to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine reveal their significantly different relationships with the United States. Their interpretations regarding the European security architecture are almost diametrically opposed. While Berlin concluded that European security must be constructed transatlantically, Paris saw confirmation of its interpretation that Europeans must be able to address security challenges independently of Washington.
The Other Transatlantic Alliance
Shortly before President-elect Donald Trump's first inauguration in January 2017, Marine Le Pen, the leader of the Rassemblement National (RN), traveled to the United States. Trump’s victory had taken both politicians and the media by surprise. Le Pen arrived in New York hoping to join a right-wing relay team: after Brexit in June 2016, Trump had delivered another victory for right-wing populism. Le Pen wanted to add a third by winning the French presidential elections of May 2017.

France, Germany, and the Nature of Europe
French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Germany in May was good for Franco-German relations. After many months of a lack of unity, painstakingly concealed disappointment with each other, and sometimes public disputes, the friendship with the neighboring country was celebrated for three days. This also made up for what had been planned for last year on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty in 1963.
Macron’s Call for Greater European Sovereignty Could Backfire
Emmanuel Macron will receive the International Peace of Westphalia Prize in Münster on May 28. It is the second prize awarded to the French president in Germany after he received the International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen in 2018. Macron is fairly popular in Germany, as he is almost everywhere in the European Union.
Macron’s Battle for his European Legacy
In the end, it was a typical speech by French President Emmanuel Macron that members of the government and MPs, journalists and students heard on Thursday morning at the Sorbonne in Paris. It was too long, as the president himself admitted after about an hour.
France’s Pivot to Europe
In spring 2024, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is once again facing massive criticism, both nationally and internationally. After he presented himself as a European leader at the beginning of the year, emphasizing Germany's lead in aid to Ukraine and calling on European Union allies to do more, the “Taurus debate” has now caught up with him again.
Drei Fachleute geben Antworten. Macron’s Indo-Pacific Balancing Act
During his state visit to China in April, French President Emmanuel Macron made controversial statements about the European Union and Taiwan, provoking outrage both in Europe and the United States. The statements, made after Macron met with President Xi Jinping, also drew considerable criticism in Germany, where commentators suggested the remarks were a rehearsal for possible rapprochement with Beijing, something that could threaten to divide Europe.
A New Foundation for Franco-German Friendship
Franco-German discord was on everyone's lips at the end of last year. The cancellation of the Ministerial Council in October 2022 was followed by a cascade of negative news. Some commentators even questioned the future of bilateral relations as a whole. Diplomats and politicians on both sides of the Rhine struggled to snatch coverage back.
The Zeitenwende Beyond Germany
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz raised expectations by declaring a Zeitenwende for Germany in February 2022 in light of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He later raised the stakes by claiming, in an article for Foreign Affairs, that this was part of a “Global Zeitenwende.” In so doing, he seemed to subsume Germany’s past mistakes into a general world historical process, which Scholz purported to offer a way to manage. Unsurprisingly, this has yet to gain traction beyond Germany.
WATCH: Times of Israel's Horovitz on the wave of terror in Paris
In this short video interview, Times of Israel’s editor David Horovitz discusses the recent wave of terror attacks in Paris, the French government’s handling of the crisis, and Israeli leaders’ calls for the immigration to Israel of French Jews. Horovitz’s comments reflect the theme of an op-ed he published on January 12, entitled “The death-cult ideology that France prefers not to name.”
