Exploring the impact of economic injury and invisible work on today's workforce
I have been fortunate to work in financial institutions with rich commercial banking divisions. Terms like SBA Express, 7(a), and 504 became second nature in the office, at client lunches, and on the golf course. However, in December 2017, I learned about the most essential SBA product after witnessing what was, at the time, the largest wildfire in the history of the State of California. The Thomas Fire burned 440 square miles through Ventura County, ultimately reaching my beloved Santa Barbara.
How to simplify vendor management with more intelligent and consistent processes
Today, financial institutions are adopting more new technology solutions to provide better services to customers — and credit unions are not exempt from this growing trend. However, the process of vetting and officially onboarding the right technology vendor can be a lengthy and cumbersome one, creating challenges for employees, customers, and vendors alike.
The role of generative AI in transforming credit unions
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been attracting the financial industry’s attention for years. Have we reached the state of pervasive use of this transformative technology? While the answer might be no, it’s probably not that far off. While significant challenges remain, the industry appears to have reached a tipping point.

5 keys to building a modern integration strategy
Today’s consumers judge their financial service providers based on a new definition of trust—one that goes well beyond the traditional factors of safety and security, and includes elements like capabilities, access and convenience. Adoption of digital services that are fully integrated into the member experience can go a long way towards addressing this new market dynamic and help credit unions compete with fintechs and new payment providers for consumer engagement.
Your credit union strategic plan … one month into 2024
Your community bank or credit union strategic plan is still fairly young this time of year. There are plenty more goal posts to reach and mile markers to pass before you achieve the initiatives you set at your session. But youth is fleeting… Your goals’ deadlines will be here faster than you think, so it’s worth examining your progress and how to maintain the pace. Lao Tzu famously wrote, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Have you taken a step yet? continue reading »
Global stocks climb to over two-year high, S&P 500 hits record
Global equities climbed to a more than two-year high and the S&P 500 touched a record peak on Wednesday, as strong earnings offset jitters related to U.S. regional banks and China’s markets. Bonds were under modest pressure, as comments from Federal Reserve officials reaffirmed expectations that the central bank may not cut rates soon. The U.S. dollar retreated and oil prices rose.
For banks, hybrid work is here to stay
The Covid-19 pandemic will undoubtedly go down in history as an event that dramatically changed how — and where — the world works. Prior to 2020 banks were doing much of their businesses in branches and offices. The pandemic forced them to quickly transition their massive workforces to work from home.

At its core, coaching is about transformation. Leading distributed teams requires transforming how we coach and changing our play calls and playbooks to get things done.

Credit unions must work together to amplify advocacy efforts and achieve results for the industry, America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle wrote to members Monday. He wrote that the unified voice of America’s Credit Unions is needed to effectively counter misinformation. “The cooperative spirit of the credit union industry is what sets us apart, and that approach to advocacy is what will ensure our success,” added Nussle.
My whisper to women: Breaking the glass ceiling in credit union executive leadership - CUInsight
If you follow me on LinkedIn, you know I talk a lot about the psychological, feel-good effect that women helping women produces. It is a ripple effect that I hope one day will be immeasurable, as today’s ripples turn into waves. In 2016, I walked through the doors of Antioch University’s Santa Barbara California campus, seeking to understand more about their upcoming Women in Leadership program. I met one of the adjunct professors there that night.
