Current status of chlorothalonil labels impacting Michigan potato production
In Michigan potatoes, chlorothalonil-containing products are a critical backbone in preventative early and late blight fungicide programs. The EPA Interim Decision (December 2024) identified maximum annual rate reductions across many crops and agricultural use sites. In potato, new seasonal use limits have been reduced to 8 pounds of active ingredients per acre per year in “non-vulnerable” soils.
Volunteer potato risk in Michigan
Volunteer crops are a unique type of weed. They occur when the remains of a previously grown crop are present in a field that has been rotated to a different crop. Volunteer potatoes are particularly problematic because leftover tubers in the ground produce new daughter tubers and can continue to emerge years after the initial planting. These plants not only pose a contamination risk and compete with other field crops for resources but can also act as a reservoir for pests and pathogens of potato.
Michigan potato late blight reported on August 5, 2024
Potato late blight has been confirmed in an additional commercial field in St. Joseph County, Michigan. Late blight on potato was confirmed over the weekend and reported Aug. 5, 2024, in St. Joseph County, Michigan. The genotype of the Phytophthora infestans pathogen was US-23. The disease was noted on several plants scattered on the northern edge of a commercial field.
Michigan potato late blight detected on July 23, 2024
Potato late blight has been confirmed in a commercial field in St. Joseph County, Michigan. In a report from Amanda Gevens, PhD, University of Wisconsin-Madison, “…late blight on potato was confirmed [July 23, 2024] in St. Joseph County, Michigan…on the southwestern edge, bordering Indiana. The genotype of the Phytophthora infestans pathogen was US-23. The disease was noted in a very small section of a commercial field (about 5 square feet).
Michigan potato late blight update - August 2, 2023
In Michigan, no late blight has been reported and current weather conditions indicate low to medium risk throughout the state (Figure 1). On July 17 and July 25, reports of potato late blight were confirmed in Alliston and Mauricie, Canada in the Provinces of Ontario and Quebec, respectively – see following communications from Eugenia Banks Potato Specialist, OMAFRA, shared by Amanda Gevens, Vegetable Pathologist, UW-Madison.
Michigan potato late blight forecast - July 8, 2020
No late blight reported. Weather-based risk low to moderate throughout Michigan. Jaime Willbur and Lee Duynslager, Michigan State University, Department of Plant, Soil and Microbial Sciences - July 8, 2020 Figure 1. July 8, 2020 – Michigan late blight forecast based on accumulation of disease severity values (DSVs) since early May emergence. Yellow pins indicate medium risk areas and green pins indicate low risk. The Michigan late blight forecast tool is currently calculating 2020 risk predictions.

Sporecaster: New white mold risk prediction smartphone app now live
Fungicides for soybean white mold management should be applied at or between the R1 (beginning flowering) and R3 (beginning pod development) growth stages. However, we have noted that in some years, later or earlier applications within this window favor disease management. The variation in responses to fungicide timing from year to year is driven by the presence of apothecia. Sporecaster is designed to predict the probability of white mold apothecial presence.
