The Humane Society Yukon says a 70 per cent surge in animal intakes last year has pushed its Whitehorse shelter beyond capacity, prompting the organization to seek a new funding arrangement and partnership with the city. President Barbara Hancock told Whitehorse city council on June 15 the shelter took in 433 animals in 2025 and has been over capacity for 18 months, straining staff, facilities and finances as owner surrenders and abandoned pets rise.
