1 INTRODUCTION The water and carbon cycles are inextricably linked. Liquid water is utilized in photosynthesis to bind CO2 molecules from the atmosphere. On the other hand, CO2 emission into the atmosphere from living organisms takes place through aerobic and anaerobic respiration processes that also release water vapor (H2O). Leaf transpiration and photosynthesis are closely connected since they are both regulated by the degree of stomatal opening (Tuzet, 2011).
