Controversy Flares Up Over Forest Fire Policies
The US Forest Service has halted previously approved funding for using controlled burns to minimize future forest fires, NPR reports, citing the government’s intention to focus primarily on a “full fire suppression strategy.” In Issues, Jerry F. Franklin and James K. Agee maintain that to address the variability of both forests and fires, the nation needs comprehensive science-based policies that consider all aspects of wildfire management.

Rugby news 2022 Benetton racism
A member for the Benetton rugby side has been suspended in relation to the racist Secret Santa gift given to Italian prop Cherif Traore. Traore said on social media he received a rotten banana at the team's end-of-year celebrations. In a joint statement issued by Benetton and the Italian Rugby Federation, the club said the suspension was a "precautionary measure", but did not say if the member was a player or support staff.
How Blue Jays newcomers will impact rest of '23 roster
In the context of team sports, there's no doubt baseball is on the individualistic side. But just because the game plays out as a series of one-on-one battles it doesn't mean that team building ignores how players on the same team affect each other's contributions. If you acquire an extreme groundball pitcher you need to give consideration to the state of your infield.
Holiday break 'vital' for Maple Leafs, especially Ilya Samsonov
TORONTO - Whether you're operating breezily at the height of your powers (like Toronto's elite forwards), battling your way through another nail-biting 60 minutes (like Ilya Samsonov), or finally get to hit pause on the video autopsies for four days (like Sheldon Keefe), the Christmas break provides a welcome breather in the relentless 82-game marathon. "Vital," Toronto Maple Leafs coach Keefe said, following Thursday's 4-3 matinee win over the Philadelphia Flyers.
Dabo Swinney makes cringeworthy reference on Signing Day
"We built this program on NIL. We really did. We built this program in God's name, image and likeness," he said at a National Signing Day news conference. Swinney's holier-than-thou act may work on some, but in the context of a cutthroat industry like college football, it's disingenuous. Swinney once railed against a system in which college athletes could earn money off their talent, stating he would consider leaving the sport. He's still here, a sign of him preaching one thing while doing the other.
Collingwood tie down Jack Crisp and Brody Mihocek with new, multi-year deals
As AFL clubs pause for the holiday period, Collingwood has snuck in the key signings of stalwarts Jack Crisp and Brody Mihocek. Both signed to new, multi-year deals, Crisp has passed up free agency to ink a three-year deal while Mihocek has committed to the club for a further two seasons. Crisp enjoyed an impressive 2022 campaign, earning his second consecutive club best and fairest honour and selection into the All-Australian squad of 44.
Commanders DE Chase Young to return in Week 16
Activated from the Commanders' reserve/PUP list weeks ago, Chase Young has seen his long-awaited return from a severe knee injury delayed. But the wait appears to be over. Pettersson a 'game-time decision' ahead of Canucks game Thursday
Elias Pettersson will be a game-time decision for the Vancouver Canucks ahead of their Thursday night showdown with the Seattle Kraken, head coach Bruce Boudreau says. The Canucks superstar has not played since December 14th due to a lingering virus that has made its way around the team. Vancouver has gone 0-2 in Pettersson's absence, losing 5-1 in back-to-back games to the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues respectively.
Watch: Robin Lopez trash talks his twin brother
Robin Lopez was mic'd up for the Cavs-Bucks game Wednesday night. Predictably, he roasted his brother. Robin is one minute younger than his brother Brook, and perhaps that's why he's so dedicated to roasting his twin. During the Cavaliers' win, Robin celebrated every time Brook traveled, turned the ball over, or missed a shot. He also called out his twin brother for flopping. "That's a flop! That's a flop!" Robin told the referee.
Maple Leafs place defenseman Rasmus Sandin on IR
After suffering a neck injury in the Toronto Maple Leafs' last game, Rasmus Sandin has been moved to injured reserve. Head coach Sheldon Keefe explained Wednesday that the team would re-evaluate him after the Christmas break, meaning a stint on IR doesn't necessarily mean he will be out long term. Sandin must miss at least seven days, but the Maple Leafs don't play again until Dec. 27 after Thursday's afternoon match with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Maple Leafs score four, but have to survive late charge by Flyers
Power-play goals from Calle Jarnkrok and Mitch Marner ignited the Toronto Maple Leafs late in the second period. They then survived a late-game scare to score a 4-3 win against the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday afternoon. In their final outing before the Christmas break, the Maple Leafs (21-7-6) increased their victory string at Scotiabank Arena to six games and a perfect 5-0 in December.
Goorjian, Powell put to rest Bay Area reinforcement talk: It's Nicholson all the way
Coach Brian Goorjian made sure he talked to both Andrew Nicholson and Myles Powell before the three headed to the locker room and celebrate the Bay Area Dragons' entry to the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner's Cup Finals. Goorjian pulled the two imports aside and thanked for their contributions in making the Hong Kong outfit only the third foreign team to reach the big league's grandest stage.

Micah Parsons' cold spell could cost him DPOY
Micah Parsons' ice-cold spell might allow 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa to edge past him in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year race. After recording 12 sacks in 11 games, Parsons has only recorded one over the past three weeks. Meanwhile, Bosa registered four in his last three games, becoming the league's sack leader (15.5). Parsons has fallen all the way to fourth, trailing not only Bosa, but the Patriots' Matthew Judon and the Browns' Myles Garrett. Parsons' slide helped Bosa's odds rise.
Stepping down right thing to do, says Olsen
Far Eastern University (FEU) is on the lookout for its next UAAP coach. After five years at the helm and with still a year left on his contract, Olsen Racela has stepped down as head coach of the Tamaraws, a decision the school only accepted on Thursday. "I felt that it was the right thing to do," said Racela, who tendered his resignation after FEU's last game this season.
NFL Week 16 betting preview: Winter weather to have major impact
We're coming off a truly wild Week 15 that featured a handful of epic comebacks with massive playoff implications. The matchups this week, however, are largely forgettable, with only five of this week's 16 games featuring two teams at or above .500. The bulk of the games this week take place Saturday and conclude with a Christmas Day triple-header and a Chargers-Colts Monday Night Football showdown. Also, as of Thursday, half the games had totals lower than 40 points.
Why Dolphins could be AFC's toughest playoff matchup
If the Dolphins make the postseason, their wide receiving duo of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle could be a handful for any opponent. Many NFL wide receiver duos are dangerous, but none more so than Hill-Waddle, who have a chance to be all-timers. They could be talked about in the same vein as Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt of "The Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams or Reggie Wayne and Marvin Harrison of the 2000s Indianapolis Colts.
FIFA reviews chef's 'undue access' to hold World Cup trophy
ZURICH (AP) - FIFA is taking "appropriate internal action" to address breaches of World Cup protocol by a celebrity chef who held the gold trophy on the field, soccer's governing body said Thursday. Nusret Gökçe, who is known as Salt Bae and is regularly seen with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, mingled with Argentina players and posed for photos after their victory over France in an epic game on Sunday in Qatar.
The video doesn't lie: Jets QB Zach Wilson stinks
Jets QB Zach Wilson threw for 317 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Lions on Sunday, suggesting there are reasons for optimism regarding the beleaguered second-year quarterback. But there's little evidence that Wilson is a good quarterback or can become one. In 21 NFL starts, he has more interceptions (17) than touchdown passes (15). Game video reveals Wilson's glaring flaws.
Commanders get big lift for playoff push with Chase Young return
It has been a long road back for Washington Commanders pass rusher Chase Young, but he is set to make his 2022 season debut on Saturday against the San Francisco 49ers. Young, the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has been sidelined since Nov. 14 of last year when he tore the ACL and ruptured the patella tendon in his right knee. He was cleared to return to practice in early November of this season but has not played in a game more than a calendar year.
New Brunswick includes 'good conduct' clause in funding deal with Hockey Canada
New Brunswick's government has included a "good conduct" clause in its funding contract with Hockey Canada ahead of the 2023 world junior hockey championship. Moncton, N.B., and Halifax are co-hosting the international tournament which runs Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. The document signed by New Brunswick's Regional Development Corporation earlier this month says that all of Hockey Canada's representatives "must be of good character and must not indulge in unethical conduct" during the event.
Falcons DC Dean Pees cleared to return
The Falcons had to make an emergency switch to their defensive coaching staff last week. A pregame collision resulted in defensive coordinator Dean Pees needing to be hospitalized and inside linebackers coach Frank Bush assuming play-calling duties. According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young could be the next superstar to request a trade should the team fail to make "inroads" come post-season time.

And if that wasn't enough, there was Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq also offering his candidature for the position. Only that all these CVs were posted using spam email ids from imposters wanting to have some fun at BCCI's expense.

Joel Embiid shades Raptors: 'They don't care about winning'

It was Toronto's sixth loss in a row. According to Yahoo! Sports, Embiid dissed the Raptors during a post-game press conference after being asked about teammate De'Anthony Melton's confidence level despite his poor shooting game.

NBA Injury Report: Zion Williamson out, Kristaps Porzingis questionable and more updates on Collin Sexton and Brandon Ingram
Zion Williamson has been ruled out by the New Orleans Pelicans as he is under the NBA's health and safety protocols. "Zanos" has already missed five games this season and should be sidelined for a couple more, starting with the matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. He is expected to miss at least two games as he tries to clear the league's Covid measures. He could be back on December 28 when New Orleans hosts the Minnesota Timberwolves.

He predicted that the Bulldogs and Colorado will be the finalists for Hunter, and that Georgia is a legitimate option for the former top recruit.

Comparing Chicago's Chase Claypool trade with other recent major WR deals
Before the trade deadline, the Bears (3-11) dealt their 2023 second-round pick to the Steelers for receiver Chase Claypool, a three-year veteran. So far, the deal looks dismal for Chicago, whose second-round pick sent to Pittsburgh will be high in the 2023 NFL Draft. Since 2020, teams have completed nine trades in which a wide receiver was moved for a return that included a first- and/or second-round draft pick.
