DEI, Falling Standards And Left-wing Ideology In Western Universities
Written by Dr James Allan on October 9, 2026. Posted in Current News Anyone over the age of about 35 has no idea how far Western universities have fallen into the mire of DEI, collapsing standards and Left-wing monoculture, says Professor James Allan. It’s time to sort them out With the recent announcement by Cambridge University that free speech should be restricted, this becomes even more important.

It’s Time to Fix our Universities
The writer is in Australia. This week I’m going to really depress readers, and especially those over the age of about 35. You see, when it comes to our universities most people over that age really have no idea just how politically partisan, how massively over-centralised, how insouciant about standards and grade-inflation, how woke, how catering to any student’s claimed sense of vague unease, and how visa factory-like they’ve become.

If I’m Far Right, then so Was John F. Kennedy
Okay readers, give me two generalisations about the democratic world over the last 50 years. Well, first off, we can sum up the constitutional law trends in five words: the triumph of American constitutionalism. Bring in a list of moral entitlements in the language of rights. Call it a bill of rights. Realise these things in no way interpret themselves.

We’re still woke, folks
Firstly, let me remind readers we have some big elections looming in the Anglosphere. Everyone will know about the US midterm elections at the start of November. But before that is the 19 October ‘do you want there to be a binding referendum to leave Canada’ referendum in the province of Alberta.

Legacy Media and Politicians Don’t Get It
The writer is in Australia. There seems to be an almost obtuse wilful blindness amongst the preponderance of those in our traditional, established political parties and their confreres (‘collaborators’ seems too harsh, just) in the legacy media.

Warming potential of atmospheric black carbon modulated by particulate matter
|
Abstract The mixing state of atmospheric black carbon is a key determinant of its climate forcing. While higher concentrations of non-black-carbon components surrounding black-carbon particles (known as coatings) can enhance radiative effects, accurately representing and validating these effects at high spatiotemporal resolution remain computationally challenging.

It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world
Let me pick out just two examples of ours being a mad, mad, mad, mad world – one here in Australia and one in the US. We’ll start at home. It is frustrating beyond belief that so many MPs in the Liberal party room think they must always toe whatever line the ABC and the Labor party lay down. Some mooted limit on free speech? Where do we sign up? What about a Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion? Dumb, dumber and Turnbull dumbest. But the Libs helped make this the focus.
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Kim Baker-El Abiad
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? I would say that gymnastics dominated my life through high school. It was what motivated me, and I strived for perfection day in and day out. Everything else revolved around it, which perhaps wasn’t always healthy. At that time, it essentially defined me. As I approached the end of high school, I was quite burned out.
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Matt McDonough
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? To me, there is no greater honor than being recognized by the school that you poured so much of your blood, sweat, and tears into. I was born and raised a diehard Hawkeye fan. Now to be recognized amongst the exceptional athletes this school has produced is so rewarding. Who were your mentors at Iowa, and what did you learn from them?
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Klas Bergstrom
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? It is such an honor to get this award, and the fact that Iowa tennis will be highlighted in the Hall of Fame means a lot to me. Who were your mentors at Iowa, and what did you learn from them? I would like to mention two people. Firstly, the person that made me pick Iowa—assistant coach Lars Nordmark. He acted as my first mentor coming to Iowa.
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Janet Moylan Ritter
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? I am honored and so grateful. There is a plethora of amazing student-athletes at the University of Iowa, and I am so thankful to be included in this stellar group. When I received the phone call from the athletic department, I was speechless. Anyone who knows me will tell you that never happens! It was incredibly emotional for me.
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Amy Herrig Tanny
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? It represents a chapter of my life that required tremendous dedication, discipline, and sacrifice. It reminds me that the relationships, lessons, and experiences I gained as a student-athlete at Iowa have stayed with me throughout my life. Who were your mentors at Iowa, and what did you learn from them?
2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Sedrick Shaw
Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you? Being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame is a tremendous honor. Lord Sumption is Wrong: Trump is No Despot
At the end of July, in the pages of UnHerd, Jonathan Sumption published what can fairly be described as an attack on, verging on a diatribe about, what he believes to be the dire state of American democracy. Yes, President Trump comes in for severe criticism.

Who You Gonna Trust?
The writer is in Australia. If you were asked to boil down today’s Australian and British Right-of-Centre politics to one short question, this would be it. Who you gonna trust, baby? And it is that issue that is making life for both Angus Taylor and Kemi Badenoch so diabolically difficult. They can repeatedly announce good, or even world’s best, policies till they’re blue in the face.

Hang together or hang separately
We all have heard Benjamin Franklin’s famous advice to the American revolutionaries: ‘We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.’ Whether that’s apocryphal or actually Franklin’s words, most everyone understands the sentiment. Well, maybe not today’s Liberal party and its leader Angus Taylor. I refer to Mr Taylor’s blast of One Nation in his recent Sydney Institute speech.

Is Michael Gove Right to Say Reform is Not “Conservative”?
The writer is in Australia. A fortnight ago my wife and I were driving some 750 kilometres one day from the north-western tip of Newfoundland island back to Gander, home of the most important civilian airport in the 1960s because it’s where planes from the east coast of North America had to refuel to get to Europe (and vice versa). It’s also where dozens and dozens of planes landed on 9/11, unplanned of course, and the tiny town put up all the passengers for four days.

Just repeal and undo
How many readers have noticed this huge failing in so many long-standing, establishment conservative political parties around the democratic world? To start, the left side of politics when in power will seed or remake some institution. Or it will enact some big-ticket legislative reform. Maybe it’s bringing into being a beefed-up, more potent and renamed Australian Human Rights Commission. Maybe it’s enacting a statutory bill of rights in Victoria, in Queensland, in New Zealand or in Britain.
