The task facing the WA public sector in readying itself for the new PRIS laws is a considerable one, particularly given the retrospectivity of some of the IPPs. For the first time, the WA public sector and those that contract with it will need to comply with comprehensive privacy obligations in respect of both the personal information they currently hold and that they plan to collect in the future.

Initially foreshadowed in late 2022, and following community consultation which commenced in 2019, the WA Government has this month introduced Bills to implement its proposed new privacy and responsible information sharing (PRIS) laws.[1] With the Bills certain to pass given the WA Labor Government's strong majority in both houses, WA Government entities and those that contract with them should start preparing for their introduction now.

Introduction Sensible and pragmatic initiatives to build awareness and cyber capabilities are at the core of the Federal Government's Australian Cyber Security Strategy, which sets the ambition of Australia being the most cyber secure nation by 2030. The Strategy presents a multi-pronged approach to lifting the resilience of Australian businesses and government agencies against cybercrime and nation-state level cyberattacks.
