Guest commentary: Foundational Black Americans support Mayor Dedrick Johnson
As we continue to endure the drama going on in Texas City and La Marque, you must ask yourself when will it all end. There seems to be constant attacks to undermine all the progress these two Settlement Communities have accomplished. As a community we have never had to endure so much negative rhetoric before. The Rev. James E. Daniels is the founder and Chairman of The Eagles Nest Community Organization and vice president for The Public Sector of The United Steelworkers Local 13-1.
Guest commentary: Embattled Black leaders have support, should fight on
I attended the most recent Texas City Commissioners meeting, and it was with regret; I guess you are wondering why. Well, I am a lifelong resident of Texas City and La Marque and there are some things happening here that has never happened before. First of all, when the first African American was elected mayor, something happened that had never happened before. There was a continued effort to recall her. Sadly, the critics succeeded in their endeavors.
Guest commentary: There is wide support for International Juneteenth Museum in Galveston
Hats off to Leonard Woolsey and editorial board of the Galveston County Daily News, as well as the mayor and Galveston City Council for the call to action for their support in having the International Juneteenth Museum erected in the birthplace of the historical announcement of the end of slavery in these United States of America. I am a lifelong resident of Galveston County. I was blessed to be raised in the iconic Settlement Community.
Guest commentary: Black community has much to be proud and concerned about
We have turned the page on a tumultuous 2024, to say the least and have embarked upon 2025 with higher aspirations. We also know, however, that we have brought some pressing problems along with us. It is a fact that we are facing problems on the state and national level, but we are also facing problems here at home. I am a lifelong resident of Galveston County, specifically the Texas City-La Marque community.

Guest commentary: Galveston County lost an icon in D.N, Benford's death
Galveston County has lost a true legend with the death of the Rev. D.N. Benford Sr. His presence and service is known nationally, throughout the state, county, municipalities and the world. I, and many others above the age of 70 years, had known Benford for our complete life in this community. The news of his passing was devastating. Men like Benford come only once in a generation.

Guest commentary: We'll fight attempts to disenfranchise Black voters
It has become apparent that because of what has been transpiring in the nation and state, the controversies in our community are going unnoticed. The African American legacy and culture in this community is now and has always been prevalent. History has taught us that the Settlement land once belonged to ex-slaves; full stop. Our Legacy and heritage though challenged are solid.

Jane Fury
It’s been years since the brutal ordeal that earned teenage Jane Fury the nickname The Comanche Kid. Her violent, tragic past is a secret now, one she’s tried to forget herself. Then a simple chance encounter in a small Texas town brings it all back in ways she never expected. To save everything and everyone she holds dear, Jane straps on her guns again and rides into Mexico with an inexperienced posse, a handful of Texas Rangers, and her head-strong, fifteen-year-old daughter.
Guest commentary: I'm proud of La Marque and Texas City for bond votes
In the words of the legendary Rudy Tomjanovich, “Never underestimate the heart of a champion.” The consolidated Texas City Independent School District proved once again that if dedicated people have a mind to work, they can accomplish great things. Working in lockstep with one another, the Texas City and La Marque Community came together and passed a much needed bond issue for our children.
The Comanche Kid
A 2022 Western Writers of America Spur Award Finalist for Best Traditional Western Novel. Out of nowhere Comanches attack, and sixteen year-old Jane narrowly survives the slaughter of her family and the kidnapping of her baby sister. Driven by grief and fury, she rides headlong into Indian territory, seeking vengeance.
Please vote 'Yes' for Texas City school bond proposals
Unlike some municipalities, Texas City ISD has some fantastic news for the community. First, and as a consolidated district, it has proven time and time again that its citizens are able to put aside their political preferences for the good of the community and district as a whole. I am encouraging everyone to go to the website to see what a district that is moving forward looks like. All of the school's academic grades are up and we are financially solvent.
How do Patient Navigators Contribute to Equitable, Quality and Culturally Appropriate Health Care?
In January 2009, the Maricopa Integrated Health System (MIHS) staged the grand opening of the Refugee Women’s Health Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona with Dr. Crista Johnson, MD, FACOG as the founding medical director. It is believed to be the only such clinic in the U.S. specializing in obstetrics and gynecology for refugee women from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Remember those left behind in Afghanistan
A Philly school teacher and veteran who helped create literacy programs in Afghanistan reflects on the incredible people he encountered—and urges help for those who are arriving in our city Sep. 09, 2021 I was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve and served a deployment to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010-11. I’ve never been one to share “war stories” but with Afghanistan back in the news I want to share at least one man’s story from there and how deeply affecting the experience was.
The impact of COVID-19 on the travelling community in primary care
The travelling community has historically struggled to achieve equal access to health care. They have a higher prevalence of disease, lower literacy rates, poor health education, and are burdened with significant rates of poverty.1 This has been a longstanding challenge in primary care, which has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a lack of research and discussion within the medical profession in addressing this ethnic minority.
The School Nurse—Fully Engaged in Community Health - Minority Nurse
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to issue the rise in the number of youths who have been diagnosed with measles. This national outbreak of the highly contagious measles virus has been recorded as 1,282 individual cases in 31 states as of December 2019 and growing. This is the greatest number of cases reported in the U.S. since 1992. More than 73% of the cases this year are linked to outbreaks in New York. Now the necessity of the school nurse has come into focus.
Despite what he says, Donald Trump isn't God
I continuously hear misinformation regarding the coronavirus pandemic. The misinformation seems to come from leaders who should lead the fight against the virus, but they have citizens who listen to them, feeling anxious, afraid, confused, lost and physically exhausted. At the risk of taking on fierce backlash, I must lean upon my spiritual calling to clear my head and thoughts.
Henry Wirz’s Quest for a Career
If ever there was a man who was always at the wrong place at the wrong time, it was Henry Wirz. Wirz has become infamous as the commander of Camp Sumter, better known as Andersonville, the most notorious of all Civil War prison camps. Heinrich Hartmann Wirz, as he was originally christened, was born in Zurich, Switzerland. His father was a tailor who pushed his son to go into a merchant career that would take advantage of Zurich’s business-friendly environment.
Sen. Romney should be commended for taking a stand
As the nation pauses to observe Black History Month, we must admit that as people we have come a long way. However, as a nation, we still have a very long way to go. I will not recapitulate all of the problems that we still face, but the nation is encountering some serious problems. As citizens, we're steamrolling toward an authoritarianism form of government.
Christians must reject the notion of Trump the Chosen
There has been a multitude of absurd statements made during this holiday season from individuals across our social strata. Usually, I would ignore those statements, but there are some that cannot be ignored, especially in this climate. A case in point: Just the other day, Secretary of Energy Rick Perry declared that Donald Trump was the chosen one of God.
The truth still matters in these divisive times
As we approach one of our most family-oriented holidays of the year, we’re in the midst of one of our most divisive times in modern history. Our country is facing some disturbing times. Truth and fact are under constant attack from some of our highest offices and officers. We’ve been told not to believe truth, even when it’s being verified by fact.
The good in our communities is often overlooked
As people, we’re faced on a daily basis with many negative situations. However, I wish to let you know that many positive things are occurring, and it feels like a breath of fresh air when I think about them. Our schools have resumed with normal schedules. The first few weeks have shown a marked improvement in discipline. In Texas City Independent School District, the safety measures and new policies have begun to bear fruit.

Shame on President Trump and his ardent followers
For President Donald Trump to allow racist and bigoted remarks to be made at a so-called campaign rally is, within itself, unpatriotic. The chant, “send her back” was meant to denigrate four first-time congresswomen at a so-called campaign rally in North Carolina. It brought back hurtful memories of the 1950s and 1960s. I thought about the manner in which Gov. George Wallace, of Alabama, was spewing his racist rants while young African Americans, whom I knew, personally, Belvin Lightfoot, Joel C.
Committee did a great job naming TCISD facilities
In response to the article (“New La Marque school and gym named for supporters,” The Daily News, April 12): The article came short of scratching the surface of the commitment and dedication of those three legends. Those facilities and gym that will bear the names of those three men will be glorious examples of the life and legacy of the former La Marque Independent School District.
We must remember that we're all one blood - American
The observance of Black History Month is over, and the observance of the Republic and the State of Texas has begun. In my opinion, this country has been dragged into a dark pit, from which we may never overcome. During this time of the observance of the Republic and State of Texas, a dark pit isn't where we want to be, but here we are. In March of 1836, men who felt that they had a right to fight for what they believed did so.
My favourite ad of all time: John West’s ‘Nothing but Fish’ from 2000
Having spent almost 26 years in the business, being asked to comment on your favourite piece of advertising is no easy task. In fact, I found it nearly impossible to choose just one. But I realised that in choosing a piece that I believed was so good, I had to ask myself which one meant something profound in my professional life.
You can't straddle the fence, or have it both ways
Upon embarking into 2019, we citizens of this country need to have a serious reality check. There are those who must admit that something is definitely wrong, by the examples that are exemplified. Cases in point, when intelligent men and women knowingly support obvious, documented falsehoods, major spiritual problems are flagged. In my generation, lies were exposed and confronted.
Despite all the bad, I see many reasons for hope
In the aftermath of the mid-term elections, I have to ask the question: Why is it that some intelligent and rational people continue to support lies, bigotry, and discrimination? The question is raised by me because while volunteering at the polls, I met many individuals of different racial and political parties who stressed civility and honesty. We worked and talked together with a common sense of decency and respect.
Comanche Attack on Early Texas Frontier
Long before they terrorized American settlers in Texas, Comanches made life miserable there not only for the Spanish colonials but also for the Plains Apaches. The destruction of a Spanish mission near the San Sabá River in March 1758 demonstrated how aggressive and fierce the Comanches could be, though the number of dead at San Sabá might have been much greater if not for a nearby presidio. Neither the Comanches nor the Apaches were native to the area that became Texas.
Truth always will triumph over lies in the long run
Recently, I was inspired by a letter from Vera Bell Gary (“We need your help to make our event successful,” The Daily News, Sept. 25) and a sports article by Brandon C. Williams (“Bulldogs send Coogs to first-ever 0-5 start in rout,” The Daily News, Sept. 29).My former educational instructor (Gary) was asking for community involvement in our Settlement Celebration. Williams insinuated that those of us who support our Cougars think that we have a birthright to making a run for a state championship.
Franklin, McCain embodied what America can be
As we approached Labor Day, the nation paused to celebrate the deaths of the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and the war hero and elder statesman, U.S. Sen. John McCain. In their distinct ways, they were revolutionists. Their common denominator was their love for America. Both services depicted what America can, and should, look like.
How to Live in Luxury Throughout Your Retirement - LivingBetter50
By lb50 on August 14, 2018 Retirement is supposed to be the time that you can truly live your life to its fullest, and yet far too many people aren’t. Not only is solitude an issue, but our health care and medical breakthroughs have also meant that humans are living longer than ever, and will assumedly only live longer from there. To thoroughly enjoy your long retirement, one way you can avoid running out of savings is to be smart about your income sources.
Not telling the truth has become the new normal
It is a very sad time when truth is being trampled and compromised. Early on, as youngsters, we learned that truth is sacred and lying about anything was wrong and dishonest. It is stunning to realize that lying appears to be the norm. There are individuals in positions of high standards who lie constantly, repetitiously and without giving the lies a second thought. In the event that a second thought may occur, he just tells another lie.
Texas City, La Marque are working together for good
For a contextual change, members of The Eagles’ Nest and The West End Community Organization will share some good news with readers. Our community is growing by leaps and bounds, both physically and morally.By now, you have heard that since the two school districts have merged, some monumental changes have occurred.
Trying to move forward in a backward America
We, the members of the United Steelworkers, spent last week in the nation’s Capitol. We met there to discuss our legislative agenda going forward. We discussed the upcoming mid-term elections among other things. While we were there, some of our union brothers from Kansas City, Missouri, were stunned regarding the plant closure of the iconic Harley-Davidson facility. This company expects to receive huge benefits from the new tax law.
We must work together to save our nation, community
As we watched the commemoration of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., and heard the divisive rhetoric from both sides, it became apparent that we need a concerted effort to bring back the sense of unity and dignity in this country. We, the people, must put our petty differences aside and save our nation and community. The national divisive rhetoric has trickled down to our community.
Racism is still alive and well in this country
Grateful is the noun that comes to mind when I think of the manner in which our parents, instructors and church leaders taught us, as young people of the community, to recognize “truth” for what it is, and how to use truth to make decisions based on realistic facts — no matter how ugly or pretty. My generation, and others before, grew up in a world of inequality based on racial hatred and segregation. It was so systemic many individuals thought it was supposed to be that way.
Obama is the complete opposite of Trump
As we undertake the recovery of the natural disasters that befell our nation and its territories, it is stunning to witness what our elected officials are trying to do in our national and state capitols. While many of their citizens are dealing with the loss of everything, including loved ones, our majority party and president are continuing their fight against the people and former President Obama. To witness individuals in the midst of tragic situations, while President Trump and his...
Are We “Poaching” Jamaican Nurses?
The government of Jamaica has asked the United States health sector to cease the poaching of its nurses. “Jamaica Says to Stop Poaching Our Nurses” was a report on National Public Radio earlier this year based on an interview with Mr. James Moss-Solomon, the chairman of the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston. He likened the situation to a crisis.
