My first instinct in writing a difficult essay about the difficult decision to leave Sox Machine was to tell the story about how I found Jim's work so influential when I first began writing, that I began imposing limits on my consumption, so that I might start to find my own voice. It just felt like a story I had told before, because it's actually the exact anecdote I used when I joined this site 2½ years ago. The aging process is great and I am very excited to experience more of it.

Pregame notes: A rushed finale

This is a website devoted to covering the bizarre animal that is the Chicago White Sox, so why would my final pregame notes be anything other than deeply weird? At 10:10am CT, just before the home clubhouse opened to media, the White Sox announced that they were moving the start time of Thursday's series finale up by an hour, to 12:10pm CT, to avoid a nearing storm front. Notice to the parties involved in playing this game didn't come much earlier than that.

"Prep pitchers are weird," said recent White Sox 11th-round draft pick Kyle Casteel. That's doubly true if they're from a cold-weather area like western Pennsylvania, spent much of their youth not really seeing themselves as a baseball player, let alone a pitcher, and didn't notice any scouts at their games until their senior year. So as the second day of last month's draft commenced, even after speaking with teams that had interest at the MLB combine, Casteel didn't know what to expect.
