Decoration Day was established following the Civil War to honor fallen Union soldiers by decorating their graves with flowers. Officially proclaimed on May 30, 1868, by Gen. John A. Logan, it evolved as Memorial Day after WWI to honor American military personnel who died in the Great War. It became a federal holiday to honor all war dead on the last Monday in May in 1971.

For more than a decade, pre-interstate Route 66 motels and auto courts have appeared on annual endangered historic property lists from organizations like the National Trust for Historic Preservation and World Monuments Fund. The increasing focus on this storied old highway fueled by its centennial linked with a growing cultural and heritage tourism movement has provided incentive for adventuresome entrepreneurs to give a few of these properties a new lease on life.
