It remains to be seen how well he will govern, but Andy Burnham's first weeks in office show he is a premier-league politician after a run of second-division British leaders. His political skill is a reason to think he might break the recent trend for prime ministers to get dumped more quickly than football managers. The footballing imagery is deliberate. If you have any doubts about Burnham's gifts as a political communicator, consider his call for Gianni Infantino to quit as head of Fifa.

Andy Burnham is enjoying the power he now holds as Britain's next Prime Minister. Hence the vaulting ambition of that first speech and the promise of "the biggest change in 40 years". That might be less grandiose than it sounds. The next election doesn't have to come until summer 2029, and Burnham will go into that election with at least a chance of remaining PM in the next parliament. He may be starting a premiership that could last seven or eight years, a marathon stretch by recent standards.
