James LaPorta is an award-winning journalist and photographer based in Jacksonville, North Carolina. He is a former U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Afghanistan war.

He has covered a wide array of topics from national security and the Department of Defense to the devastation left in the wake of Hurricane Matthew and political battles between North Carolina and the LGBTQ community.

From award presentation: Student Project: James LaPorta, University of North Carolina Wilmington, The Seahawk.org “Is a UNCW policy unknowingly jeopardizing national security by violating federal law?” showed good use of a FOIA request to look at the problem of UNCW copying military IDs or DD-214 documents to give military or veterans special parking permits in possible violation of a law prohibiting such copying.

From award presentation: James has provided in depth reporting on two articles that forced institutions to look at what ramifications their actions had on the University of North Carolina Wilmington and community as a whole. One story he wrote was about how the university could be jeopardizing national security by photocopying military identification cards, which earned the newspaper its first outside award for work he did at our paper. James also wrote an in depth article on the Wilmington, North Carolina heroin epidemic.
