In the '00s, everyone was making edgy spin-offs where the main character goes on a shooting spree. See: Ratchet & Clank: Deadlocked, Shadow the Hedgehog, Jak 2, and Devil May Cry (while it didn't feature guns, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within certainly fit the bill). Not even Final Fantasy 7 was exempt, as Square Enix jumped on the trend with Dirge of Cerberus, centered on Vincent Valentine three years after the end of the game.

Newly-appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is returning the console giant to traditional exclusives as part of a wider initiative to "reset for a stronger Xbox and build the #1 gaming and entertainment company", but not every game will follow that model. Halo: Campaign Evolved, for example, will still launch on PS5 later this year, but its sudden pull from last week's State of Play may have strained the company's relationship with PlayStation.
