The tony University Section of New Orleans is home to two educational institutions, Loyola University and Tulane University. They are directly adjacent to each other, but bigger, richer Tulane casts a shadow on Loyola’s 24-acre main campus, which is hemmed in by Tulane on one side and high-end residential on the other. “Loyola’s campus is like the little brother,” John P. Klingman, professor emeritus of architecture at Tulane’s School of Architecture, told AN.

A competition seeks proposals to redesign toilet facilities at the Gropius House

Historic New England has launched a competition to design a separate, permanent public restroom for Gropius House, the Lincoln, Massachusetts, home of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius. Since the historical site opened to the public in 1984, visitors have had to use a porta potty located outside of the home’s former garage, turned into a repurposed welcome center.

Joy Riding Through Spring Hill in the 1960s

I became enamored with cars in the early 1960s, before ubiquitous air conditioning. As toddlers, my siblings and I would tool around Spring Hill with our mother in her small English Ford. It was something of a heat-induced daze, the sun blaring down on the car with its red leather interior. One of momma’s hands was used to grasp the ever-present cigarette, the other to wave to her friends, who seemed to be everywhere.
