There was no doubt which image would be leading the news bulletins: at the end of their joint press conference the Sweden Democrat leader, Jimmie Åkesson, had gone in for a handshake, but Liberal leader Simona Mohamsson went in for a hug. Maybe it was a spontaneous embrace, or maybe it was calculated to send a message to Mohamsson’s coalition partners: that they could trust her to stick with their right-wing project. In return please, pretty please, lend us enough votes to stay in parliament.

The most unexpected foreign words in Swedish Original

Kalabalik In Swedish it means "mayhem". “Kalle’s crazy dog caused a kalabalik in the tunnelbana.” In Turkish it means crowded, or congested. So how did this Turkish word end up in Swedish? Well, we can date it exactly to February 1713. Swedish King Charles XII was down on his luck, defeated by the Russians and camping out in a place called Bender in Moldova, then part of the Ottoman Empire.

Sweden naturalizes more people than any other country in Europe - 861 people per 100,000 inhabitants in 2021, more than four times the EU average. Perhaps this isn’t surprising. Not only has Sweden had high migration for many years, but the process is almost as easy as sending in your SMS tax return. To become French you have to pass four language tests, then submit to a face-to-face grilling, in French, by a local official.
