The best fantasy and science fiction novels with feminist themes and strong female lead characters
James Tiptree Jr. is really Alice Sheldon. She wrote under a male pseudonym for many years due to the male domination of science fiction at the time. Meet Me at Infinity is a great introduction to her work, as it contains both fiction and biographical pieces. She’s a tremendous writer who I found to be very inspiring. Her ability to craft impactful stories with strong female characters is amazing. The Tiptree Award is named after her. I met Octavia in 1999 at a science fiction convention.

Soft Science Fiction: 15 Classic and Contemporary Must Read Books
One of the things that I love about science fiction is its myriad sub-genres. Alien invasion, cyberpunk, alternate history, post-apocalyptic, afro-futurism, time travel, space opera, LGBTQ, the ultra-unreal, and many more: there is something for everyone! And of these many sub-genres, the two largest ones divide the entire sci-fi world. Providing endless material for debate, they get to the heart of what sci-fi does as a literary genre.
Worlds beyond
Penguin Classics Science Fiction has launched with ten titles in a stunning new series design, featuring essential works of space opera, dystopia, slipstream and satire from the great science fiction writers of the US, Russia, Argentina, Germany and beyond. Masters of the genre James Tiptree, Jr., Andreas Eschbach and Angélica Gorodischer are published alongside favourite classics from the likes of H.P. Lovecraft and Yevgeny Zamyatin; and New Wave masterworks by Stanislaw Lem and Kurt Vonnegut.
10 Female SFF Authors and the Stories Behind Their Pen Names
For years, female writers have adopted male pseudonyms to get more eyes on their work. Nowhere is the trend more prevalent than in the science fiction and fantasy world, a genre largely dominated by men. A fake male identity tends to resonate more with the thousands of male book-buyers—and thus improve sales; because how could a woman write good science fiction?
Get the Word of the Day - scrooch | Dictionary.com
Origin of scrooch Scrooch “to crouch, squeeze, huddle” was originally a U.S. colloquial and dialect word. It is probably a variant of scrouge “to squeeze, crowd,” itself a blend of the obsolete verb scruze “to squeeze” and gouge. To make things even more unclear, scruze itself is a blend of screw and bruise. Scrooch entered English in the 19th century.
THE WOMEN MEN DON'T SEE-PAGE 1
I see her first while the Mexicana 727 is barreling down to Cozumel Island. I come out of the can and lurch into her seat, saying "Sorry," at a double female blur. The near blur nods quietly. The younger one in the window seat goes on looking out. I continue down the aisle, registering nothing. Zero. I never would have looked at them or thought of them again. Cozumel airport is the usual mix of panicky Yanks dressed for the sand pile and calm Mexicans dressed for lunch at the Presidente.
Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah – Creative New York
Rachel Kaadzi Ghansah is one of our great readers and bibliographers. The kind that writers are speaking to when they adopt the second person. That she is also one of our greatest writers, and that she has written them back for over a decade, is serendipity itself. One could reconstruct a genealogy of the black fantastic from her footnotes alone, an intertext from the underground that is required reading for any engaged student of art or of history.
The Last Flight of Doctor Ain
Published in July 2017 (Issue 86) | 2730 words © 2003 by James Tiptree, Jr. Originally published in The Road to Science Fiction: Volume 4: From Here to Forever, edited by James Gunn. Reprinted by permission of the author's estate. Dr. Ain was recognized on the Omaha-Chicago flight. A biologist colleague from Pasadena came out of the toilet and saw Ain in an aisle seat. Five years before, this man had been jealous of Ain’s huge grants.
Get the Word of the Day - ataraxia | Dictionary.com
Ataraxia “impassiveness, calmness” is best known from and associated with the ethics of the Athenian philosopher Epicurus (341–270 b.c.). It is acquired by shunning politics and obnoxious people, by paying no attention to the gods or an afterlife, and by devoting oneself to trustworthy friends and a simple life.

The Most Mysterious Woman In the History of Sci-Fi
The Most Secretive Woman in the History of Science FictionThis month marks the centennial of sci-fi author James Tiptree, Jr., a man who was as fictional as his make-believe charactersby Ted Gioia Who is the most mysterious sci-fi author of them all? Maybe that fellow L. Ron Hubbard, who decided that a religion from outer space had a better payback than stories about outer space? Or perhaps Philip K. Dick, who was convinced he had been possessed by the spirit of the prophet Elijah?

Love Is the Plan the Plan Is Death
Remembering— Do you hear, my little red? Hold me softly. The cold grows. I remember: —I am hugely black and hopeful, I bounce on six legs along the mountains in the new warm! . . . Sing the changer, Sing the stranger! Will the changes change forever? . . . All my hums have words now. Another change! Eagerly I bound on sunward following the tiny thrill in the air. The forests have been shrinking again. Then I see.
And I Awoke and Found Me Here on the Cold Hill’s Side
He was standing absolutely still by a service port, staring out at the belly of the Orion docking above us. He had on a gray uniform and his rusty hair was cut short. I took him for a station engineer. That was bad for me. Newsmen strictly don’t belong in the bowels of Big Junction. But in my first twenty hours I hadn’t found any place to get a shot of an alien ship.
