We got a sneak peek at Halfdays' new Gore-Tex collection for women. Here's what we didn't expect.
This article originally appeared on Ski Mag I woke up at 4:30 a.m. on a gloomy September day, ready to spend the day in the rain. The rain, as it turned out, was indoors. Specifically, inside a glass-walled chamber at the Gore-Tex factory in Elkton, Maryland, designed to make it pour on command. I was at the facility to see what went into creating a new outerwear collection from Halfdays , the woman-owned ski brand that has reached cult status among female skiers.

From Protein Soda to Protein Bread, We Tried the Weirdest Protein Foods We Could So You Wouldn't Have To
Eating high-protein is among the most popular specialty diets in America right now, and food manufacturers are cashing in. Walk down the aisles of any grocery or convenience store, and you’ll see everything from bars to milk to breakfast cereal hawking just how much of the stuff it packs in.
Everything You Need To Know Before Planning A Trip To Valle Nevado
And there I lay on the ground. Snow up my jacket, and my goggles knocked unevenly. How did I wind up here, dangling under the rope tow of a surface lift for the second time? I’m a ski industry professional after all, and this is flat-out embarrassing. To rewind a bit… South America is having a banner year—a Utah-style 900-inch-season type of year. One that will be remembered for generations. Valle Nevado was on my must-visit list, especially with a new hotel debuting this season.
Arc'teryx, Patagonia, and More On Sale For Labor Day—Here Are Our Picks

Retailers are actively working to clear shelves of last year’s gear, which means deep discounts on your favorite ski brands.

Snow Pass and the Snow Triple Play are bringing new levels of affordability to the megapass game. (Photo: Courtesy of Belleayre Mountain) SKI spoke with the parent company of Snow Partners’ CEO and Chief Marketing Officer to understand why the Snow Pass, a new product, deserves a spot on the megapass roster. Earlier this year, we reported on a new megapass entering the market, debuting this season for $399.99.
North America Gets A Lot Wrong When It Comes To Skiing—Except Our Lift Lines
On a busy bluebird Saturday at Valle Nevado, I joined the line for the Andes Express, the country’s fastest lift, a Poma that travels 1,355 feet in about six minutes. The lift itself was noticeably quicker than its nearby competition, but the mosh pit of a line to board made the efficiency irrelevant. Despite entering the queue together, my two ski partners and I were swallowed up by skiers pushing forward in every direction. There were designated lanes, but discernible lines within them.
Wildfire Is Ravaging One of Montana’s Most Beloved Small Ski Hills
Maverick Mountain, a mom-and-pop ski area in Beaverhead County, Mont., has lost more than two-thirds of the resort—including its only lift—to the Sand Creek Fire, which ignited on Aug. 1. It’s one of two wildfires currently threatening the county: The Bobcat Lakes Fire has kept the area under fire watch since July 31. The cause of both fires remains under investigation, and both sit at zero percent containment.

Eagle Point Resort announced today (Aug. 3) that it will not open for skiing this winter. In June, the Cottonwood Fire caused extensive damage to the southern Utah resort’s lifts, ski terrain, and surrounding forest. In a statement to SKI, Eagle Point cited this destruction, along with the extensive recovery work still needed, as the reason it won’t be reopening.

AI Has Some Thoughts About Your Skiing. You Probably Won’t Like Them.
As it turns out, robots are pretty mean when it comes to roasting skiers. (Photo: Getty Images/ Ruslan Shevchenko) Skiers share a lot of opinions about the industry: lift tickets are too expensive, gear is too expensive, lodge food is too expensive, lodging is … you get the point. Since there are so many shared opinions, I love any chance I can get to hear some hot takes—views that may not be as popular, but the opinion-holder is extremely passionate.
This Is The Ski Lodge Menu Upgrade We Didn't Know We Needed
As a ski industry professional, I’m often asked where I think the sector can improve. While I’d love to see lower lift ticket prices and better accessibility, I also know neither can be solved overnight. I do, however, have one suggestion that will no doubt bolster spirits throughout the ski universe. Peanut butter hot chocolate. In my opinion, there are few greater joys than sipping on a paper cup filled with sweet, piping hot cocoa.

Vail Resorts' CEO Hears Your Resort Frustrations, and Also Shares Them
When asked what his biggest personal frustration is with the average ski day, Vail Resorts’ CEO Rob Katz doesn’t hesitate: “Gear. To me, that is by far the biggest challenge.” He backs his answer up with the logistical nightmare of bringing ski gear just about anywhere. “If you own gear, you have to get your gear to the mountain, and then the question is: Is it the right gear for that day? Is it the newest gear? Are your skis tuned? Are they waxed the right way? Are they prepped for the day?
6 Ways To Make Winter Easier By Planning Ahead This Summer
If you forgot to tune your skis at the end of the winter, don't panic—here's a checklist to help you prep for ski season. For many of us, the ski season ended in spring, and by now, frosty fingers and getting dressed in a frigid parking lot are just distant memories. However, being a skier is a year-long job. And while we’ve got some time before we’re scanning our passes and riding the lifts, there’s plenty of maintenance we should be keeping up with to make our winters even better.
How One Utah Storm Produced Fresh Snow—and Dangerous Fire Weather
Utah just got June snow as wildfires burn nearby. Here's the surprising reason the same storm fueled both. (Photo: Courtesy of Brighton Resort) A rare late-June winter storm dusted Utah’s highest ski resorts with fresh snow over the weekend—even as the same weather system helped fuel one of the state’s worst wildfire outbreaks in recent memory.
You've Probably Never Heard of This Under-the-Radar Wyoming Ski Town. You're Missing Out.
You may not know of Laramie other than the Broadway show. Here's why that's about to change. (Photo: Courtesy of Visit Laramie) “You’re spending your weekend where?” It was a fair question. Aside from one Broadway-obsessed friend, most of the people I told about my upcoming weekend trip had never heard of such a place. Laramie, Wyoming.
Utah Fire Destroys Ski Resort as the Blaze Remains Uncontained
A wildfire originating in southern Utah has destroyed structures at Eagle Point Resort in the town of Beaver. The Cottonwood Fire began Monday evening and, as of Wednesday morning, has consumed over 59,613 acres. The cause is still under investigation, but authorities believe the origin to be human-caused. As of press time, the fire is zero-percent contained. Eagle Point is a beloved family resort comprising 600 lift-served acres across 43 runs in the Tushar Mountain range.

The Hidden Prime Day Ski Deals You’ll Regret Missing
Amazon Prime Day snuck up on us this year. The sales-palooza always seems to happen the first or second week of July, but this year it came early (as in today, June 23 through June 26). If you’re not sure where to start, keep scrolling because the SKI editors went through all the deals and pulled the ones that we’re eyeing. From sunscreen to heated vests, if you’re a skier, these are the deals you should take advantage of. This is my tried-and-true, every-single-day sunscreen.
What Your Ski-Obsessed Dad Really Wants For Father’s Day
For many of us, core ski memories start with Dad. He’s the one cheering us on, and often the final boss when it comes to people to outski. Unfortunately, dads can be hard to shop for. My dad, in particular, is a self-proclaimed “retro grouch”. He unironically skied in jeans and a hockey helmet for years, claiming they did the job just as well as traditional ski gear. He couldn’t be bothered with goggles until an instructor scared him straight about going blind. What would he ever do without me?
Ski Advice We'd Only Give To Our Worst Enemy
We've all received unsolicited advice, and while some of it may have been helpful, most of it was probably bad. Have you ever found yourself sitting on a lift looking below at skiers and thinking something along the lines of: he’s way too far over his toes, or listening to someone complain about their boots all day long, only to realize they’re a size and a half too small? Like most growing pains in life, skiing requires plenty of feedback. Some of it is good, most unsolicited.

Chris Benchetler Turned a Grateful Dead Soundtrack Into a Live Ski Movie Experience
Artist, filmmaker, and pro skier Chris Benchetler is back with another epic Grateful Dead ski film. Here's how you can see it. Chris Benchetler has spent his career blurring the lines between skiing, art, and music. But his latest film, Mountains of the Moon, may be his most ambitious attempt yet. The movie pairs Benchetler’s signature dreamlike visuals and nighttime skiing segments with a soundtrack built entirely around the music of the Grateful Dead.

Skiers Share the Weirdest Things They've Ever Lost—or Found—on the Slopes
Every year as the snow melts, resorts send employees and volunteers out to retrieve lost items surfacing for the first time in months. There are, of course, the items you’d expect skiers to lose: car keys, mittens and gloves, poles galore, and more phones than an Apple store. But every year, there are also things that make us scratch our heads and audibly ask “how?” At this point, we’ve seen everything from retainers to spatulas, and even an iPod Nano (do they even make those anymore?).

Everything You Need To Know Before Skiing Whistler Blackcomb For The First Time
Whistler Blackcomb is a behemoth. It is one of the largest ski resorts in North America and consistently ranks among the top 10 largest on Earth. For years, Whistler Blackcomb’s size intimidated me, and I avoided planning group ski trips there because it felt overwhelming. This March, I decided to tackle the giant alone. My logic being if I were to get lost, at least there wouldn’t be anyone else to blame. Plus, my passport was burning a hole in my pocket, and I was ready for a solo adventure.

Is Sun Valley's Radical Project Enough to Save the Community from Wildfires?
If you’ve skied Sun Valley the past few years, you may notice that the resort has changed. Yes, they’ve finally adapted the RFID scanners that eliminate the need for skiers to wear their passes on the outside of their kit, and they now have outdoor cubbies for storing street shoes. But that’s all small [Idaho] potatoes compared to the resort’s Bald Mountain Stewardship Project.
Looking To Ski Aspen On The Cheap? Consider This Secret-Season Hack
A ski trip to Aspen is often amalgamated with high prices, making it feel less accessible to budget-conscious travelers. And while the resort does a decent job of helping families stretch their dollar with family discounts and lodging bundles, if you’re looking to ski on the cheap, lower-cost options are typically found elsewhere. Later in the season, however, prices begin to shift. Spring can bring a range of discounts across lift tickets, lodging, and gear.
Perfect Moment and H&M Made a Ski Line. Here’s How It Performed. Original
If you’ve noticed an influx of colorful patterns, shimmering silvers, or bold stars on the slopes lately, you’ve likely spotted Perfect Moment gear, a luxury French ski brand. Perfect Moment isn’t new; in fact, its industry roots are closer to Teton Gravity Research than Bogner. The Chamonix-born brand launched in 1984, when Thierry Donard designed his gear for freeride athletes.
How Does Perfect Corduroy Get Made? I Rode With Deer Valley’s Grooming Crew to Find Out.
Earlier this winter, I was driving a few friends who had never been to Park City home from dinner. “What are all those lights up on the mountain?” they asked. Those, I explained, were snowcats. They groom the mountain pretty much from the moment the lifts stop spinning to when they reopen. We then watched several hours of YouTube videos to get an idea of what it’s really like to drive one.
How the Epic and Ikon Pass Class Action Lawsuit Could Affect Skiers Original
It’s no surprise to skiers that megapass companies like Vail Resorts and Alterra Mountain Company (which owns Ikon) have a large monopoly in the ski industry, especially when it comes to bigger destination resorts. It’s also not groundbreaking information that, for skiers looking to ski more than a handful of days, the megapasses seem to save you money. What is less clear to skiers, however, is whether or not the value of the megapass is artificial.

Everything You Need To Know Before Skiing Grand Targhee
“This is probably pretty dumb,” I thought, pausing to snap a selfie for my friends back home, proof of just how little I could see in the dense fog offering a vertigo-esque effect to the white snow beneath my skis. Caught up in the excitement on my first morning at Grand Targhee, I ignored every warning sign and dropped in on my first run without a second thought. I hadn’t even glanced at a trail map. I hopped on the first chair I saw and took a left at the top.
