'Desconocidos': soledad, amor y fantasmas

A glorious, comforting, and ridiculously calorific taste of northern Norway
Møsbrømlefse in Oslo As I dragged my knife through folded flatbread, golden brunost gravy pooled on my plate. On the second cut, a stream of cream gushed out, followed by more oozy brunost, which spilled uncontrollably out of the steaming packet of flatbread. It was my first experience eating møsbrømlefse, a hyper-regional dish from the northern Norway sea-coast district of Salten, just north of the Arctic Circle.
See the stars of Riot Fest as they shine offstage
In photographs of bands at festivals, typically the musicians are paying attention to the crowd, to their instruments, or to each other—they don’t tend to act like they know the camera is there. Ryan Segedi’s portraits of artists at Riot Fest, taken with portable lights in front of a simple white backdrop in the corner of the festival’s press tent, provide a more intimate look at people we’re used to seeing under colored spotlights.

How we got those cute dogs to pose for our Road Trips Issue (hint: it involved broccoli)
It doesn’t take much to get Chicagoans motivated to hit the road in the summer. But how do you get dogs excited? Turns out, a few pieces of broccoli, a handful of peppers and couple of ice cubes did the trick on a hot day in May when we shot the Road Trips Issue cover featuring pups Winnie and Harry. Cover model Amrita Goel has trained her driving pal, sheppard mix Winnie, to shake, give five, give ten, and generally be camera-ready—believe it or not—through the motivation of raw veggies.

How we got all those pot leaves for our #420Day issue
How to illustrate our annual pot issue? It would have been easy to take a picture of a giant bud and call it a day, but we also wanted something to tie several stories together while visualizing the mood enhancing effects of marijuana. So we decided to do a still life with common elements to illustrate each story. For that, we needed some pot leaves.

Here's how we made the frozen Reader cover this week
What did it take to make this week's frozen cover? A big freezer, baking dishes full of water, two giant boxes of cherry and strawberry Jello, filters, razors, a hammer, an old window, and whatever we could find in a cold basement. And a few weeks of trial and error. We wanted to illustrate Evan F. Moore's story about racism in hockey—and efforts to change the game and diversify the sport—in a more impactful way. Thus, the frozen headline. But how to do that?
