Abstract Accelerated Arctic warming and wetting has global impacts, as the region’s glaciers and ice caps respond to variations in temperature and precipitation, impacting global sea-level change. But as the observations needed to calibrate models are scarce, predictions cannot confirm if increases in snowfall can help offset melt.

Abstract Despite their global societal importance, the volumes of large-scale volcanic eruptions remain poorly constrained. Here, we integrate seismic reflection and P-wave tomography datasets with computed tomography-derived sedimentological analyses to estimate the volume of the iconic Minoan eruption.

The unique geochemical fingerprint of volcanic ash can help us identify past eruptions. Earth scientists were quick to realize the possibilities of this approach to determine the age of geological deposits like a succession of sediment or rock layers. Today, a whole research field is dedicated to this effort. And a very dynamic one: most studies focused on visible layers just decades ago, while a new generation of researchers now trace invisible layers across continents.
