Editor’s summary Preclinical mouse models are commonly used to assess the tumor treatment efficacy of a particular drug candidate before it advances to clinical trials. However, these models do not always faithfully mirror the eventual treatment responses observed in humans. One reason for this is that current statistical methods analyze the average tumor response in vivo and do not sufficiently account for response heterogeneity observed both within and between animal groups.
