Jane Qiu’s Biography

Jane Qiu is an award-winning independent science writer in Beijing, contributing to publications such as Nature, Science, Scientific American, MIT Technology Review, STAT, National Geographic, Knowable, Audubon, Science News, and The Guardian.

With a PhD in cancer genetics, Qiu has covered a wide range of topics, from life science, conservation, environment, geoscience, anthropology, development issues, to science policy. Her global perspective is informed by studying and working in UK and the US for 16 years and travelling to dozens of countries on all seven continents—from the Arctic, the Antarctic, to the peaks of the Himalayas (up to 22,000 feet).

Her work has been recognised for its originality, depth, nuances, exhaustive reporting, scientific rigour, masterful storytelling, and bravery—often challenging received wisdom and dominant narratives as she highlights under-reported stories and overlooked perspectives in the context of the developing world.

Qiu has won prestigious journalism awards from the US Association of Health Care Journalists (2023), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2016 & 2022), the Association of British Science Writers ( 2017), the South Asian Journalists Association (2017), and the Asia Environmental Journalism Awards (2016).

Qiu is a recipient of numerous prestigious international fellowships such as Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT, the Pulitzer Center travel grants, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF)’s Fund for Women Journalists, European Geosciences Union (EGU) Science Journalism Fellowship, and Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL)’s Logan Science Journalism Fellowship.
