Southern Oregon University will cut one-fifth of its budget

After months of financial uncertainty, the university's board unanimously approved a plan Thursday aimed at stabilizing the institution's finances and keeping it viable for the long term. Southern Oregon University leaders say the so-called Vitality Plan, which calls for more than $20 million in cuts — about one-fifth of the university's budget — will stabilize the institution and put it on a path to financial sustainability.

State Emergency Board approves $7.5 million for Southern Oregon University

Oregon's Emergency Board approved $7.5 million Wednesday to help keep Southern Oregon University operating through the next fiscal year, despite concerns from some lawmakers that the university's financial recovery plan doesn't go far enough. The emergency funding is the first half of a possible $15 million legislative package for SOU, allocated through the state's Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The remaining $7.5 million could be released this fall.

Why higher-income housing remains scarce in Arcata

Arcata has fallen short of building enough housing for higher-income residents, according to the state's Regional Housing Needs Allocation, which sets housing production targets for cities every eight years. David Loya, the city's community development director, said Arcata has generally met its housing goals but has consistently lagged in the above-moderate income category.
