From Louisiana to Virginia, Voter Suppression Spreads
On April 21, I went to my precinct to vote for the only item on the ballot: an amendment drawing new congressional maps that would offset Republican attempts to gerrymander across the country. On April 22, a Tazewell County, VA judge blocked the amendment, saying it did not abide by the Constitution of Virginia. On May 8, the Virginia Supreme Court agreed, blatantly ignoring the will of the state's residents. The system of checks and balances is broken.
The Group Chat: State of the Union 2026
4:47 p.m. ET - The kind of policy violence we've seen against our community has become the hallmark of this Administration, proving to all Americans that cruelty was always the point. But the spirit of Black America has always been strong and will never be broken. Whatever Trump says tonight, here's what we know to be true: 🩺 Trump is Making America Sicker The administration's attacks on healthcare access are making America sicker, especially Black communities.
The Group Chat: Election Day Updates
While there are no Congressional and presidential races to drive voter turnout this year, this Election Day is just as important. (Every election is, tbh.) Local races that impact our communities daily are on the ballot this year. States like Virginia and New Jersey are electing a new governor. Cities like New York and Detroit are choosing their next mayor. And voters in California are challenging a president's attempt to rig next year's election through redistricting.
The Culture Shelf: Be a Revolution
How to Be a Revolution After 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was murdered in Florida in 2012, Ijeoma Oluo turned to words to try to write away the pain and fear she was feeling. "I was writing because I felt like I was going to go crazy if I didn't," she said. "I was working in a space that liked to pretend it was liberal and it cared, but would never have a really important conversation about race.
Whitewashing Slavery? Not on Nikole Hannah-Jones' Watch
Context is Key It's a new week and there's been a new attempt at downplaying the history and impact of slavery in the United States. Professor, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, and journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones had time this week to respond to a fitness influencer and reality show personality Jillian Michaels' recent attempt to minimize the impact of slavery. The death of expertise is the death of American democracy. Everyone is not deserving of our platforms, especially in these dangerous times.
Diverse, Inclusive Football
A Masterclass in DEI Attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion have been jammed down our throats for the past few weeks. The federal government, schools, and some of our favorite businesses are walking back promises made when police brutality and White supremacy captured the nation's attention in 2020.
For Black Voters, By Black Voters
Blog October 29, 2024 Throughout the election season, there have been polls, analysts, and politicians pontificating on the intentions and motivations of Black voters. Are Black men voting for Trump? Will young people and Black sororities and fraternities show up this election? Will we see Black voter turnout reach historic levels like 2008 when Barack Obama ran - and won? If there is one thing we know, it's that no one understands us like us.
Want Gold? Embrace Diversity
Nestled on my perch in Philadelphia, I swiped through my phone, excited to watch the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic games and cheer for the top athletes in the world doing what they'd trained to do. Throughout the day, I'd been swarmed by images and videos of rapper Snoop Dogg carrying the Olympic torch. Basketball player LeBron James and tennis star Coco Gauff were chosen to be the Team USA flag bearers.

Before we can fully give our attention to 2024, we have to acknowledge all of our collective wins in 2023. Inflation and problematic policy makers tried it but we fought, we voted, we spoke up, and we celebrated each other and the culture. Together. We elected a slew of new Black leaders We showed up and showed out for elections. As a result, legislative bodies across the country got a bit more diverse.
