Letter: First Amendment rights matter
Sept. 17 marks the signing of the U.S. Constitution in 1787. Later, on Dec. 15, 1791, the Bill of Rights was ratified, including the First Amendment. This year, the First Amendment turns 235 years old. It is only 45 words long, but those words protect freedoms essential to our democracy: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition our government.
Letter: SAVE Act is dangerous for voters
Recently, Patty Murray sent out information about the SAVE Act that Donald Trump is trying to force passage of. The SAVE Act will force voters to jump through many hoops just to vote in our elections. None of our current IDs, like a driver’s license, student ID, or even military ID, will be eligible as proof of identity to vote under the new law. Rather, you will need a birth certificate or passport. Acquiring a birth certificate takes time, and a passport costs $165.
Letter: Stay engaged in political process
For the first time in Skagit County history, all four Superior Court judges are women. Also, county Commissioner Joe Burns is bringing a new generation of leadership to our county’s council. Along with these leaders, 19-year-old Sammy Solano Rivera and Monica Vivanco are working on local school boards to bring ideas and influence from young families in their local districts. In 1920, the 19th Amendment prohibited denying the right to vote to all citizens based on sex.
