On 18 June 2025, the Legislative Council passed the Employment (Amendment) Bill 2025 redefining the requirement for a ‘continuous contract’ under the Employment Ordinance (Cap. 57, the Laws of Hong Kong) (the “EO”). The Employment (Amendment) Ordinance 2025 will come into effect on 28 December 2025, while the new threshold will start to apply from 18 January 2026 in light of the 3-week transition period. This marks a pivotal shift to one of the fundamental pillars of employment law in Hong Kong.
