I explore the problematic role of “wife,” even in 2021. I was inspired by Glen Close’s role as wife to a Nobel Prize winner in the film “The Wife” (2018), in which she was overlooked, patronized, forced to play “second fiddle” to her most difficult husband. Close has spoken of the denigrated position her mother took in her own marriage. Today’s dilemma: the wife who does not play second fiddle to her husband is still regarded by some as castrating.
