I’m often asked whether, in the age of Trump, we can trust government data. My answer has always been that we can because our statistical agencies have layers of insulation from such interference. To be clear, that doesn’t mean the system is free from any interference. The Trumpies’ hostilities to facts and their maintenance of their alt reality requires them to harass, fire, and defund those wihin in the gov’t statistical infrastructure. But I was skeptical that they could cook the books. Until now.
