Apple’s latest plan to get you to upgrade more often seems like a great deal–until you do the math. Apple is right now, and has been for most of the past decade, the most valuable company in the world. That’s largely due to the fact that the iPhone is the single most successful consumer product ever. You’d think the company would be so happy it’s selling so many iPhones. The thing is, Apple could sell more. The problem isn’t that iPhones cost too much. It’s that they last too long.

Apple’s lawsuit against OpenAI reveals a much bigger problem with their partnership. For two years now, Apple and OpenAI have been an interesting version of partners. The iPhone maker made a point of highlighting that it was building ChatGPT into the Siri revamp it introduced in 2024, and users could even log into their OpenAI account to take advantage of syncing their chats. Since then, however, things haven’t gone well between the two companies.

The two companies are battling over OpenAI’s hardware ambitions. Apple typically isn’t a company that prefers to fight in public. It’s notoriously secretive about just about everything—not just its product plans. This week, however, the most secretive company in technology just did the least Apple thing imaginable: it filed a 41-page federal lawsuit, in open court, making public a fight with one of its partners over the thing it considers most valuable.
