Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I covered general assignment news in a suburb outside of Cleveland, Ohio.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I've poked a typewriter, but never used one to write anything substantial.

How is social media changing news?

It not only increases the eyes on a page, but it also provides a tool for tracking down sources and finding story ideas.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

A journalist is a curious person who wants to expose the public to the truth, from uncovering corruption to spotlighting a unheard tale.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Day-to-day, that might be a laptop, a notepad and a cell phone. But I'm always learning new tools and software to get my work done.

What's your favorite social network?

Five years ago, I would have said Facebook. I spend my time on Twitter and Reddit now.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I'm a naturally curious (i.e. nosey) person who wants to learn something new everyday.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I took our only journalism class twice. Our "stories," which were more essays, were published in the local paper as "Paw Prints."

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'm most proud of a two-part series on how an oil extracted from medical marijuana benefited epileptic children in Los Angeles County

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Do the work. Write the story. Experience as much as possible.
