Letter: Fargo needs to put children first
As a Fargo parent, I want my kids to grow up healthy and free from addiction. That’s why I support efforts to end the sale of flavored nicotine products and strengthen tobacco retail licensing. Flavors like candy and fruit play a central role in youth initiation. The vast majority of young people who vape report starting with flavored products, and nicotine addiction increases lifelong risks for heart disease, cancer and stroke.
Mutations in mitochondrial ferredoxin FDX2 suppress frataxin deficiency - Nature
Abstract Frataxin is a key component of an ancient, mitochondrial iron–sulfur cluster biosynthetic machinery, serving as an allosteric activator of the cysteine desulfurase NFS1 (refs. 1,2,3,4,5). Loss of frataxin levels underlies Friedreich’s ataxia6, the most common inherited ataxia. Yeast, Caenorhabditis elegans and human cells can tolerate loss of frataxin when grown in ‘permissive’ low oxygen tensions7. Here we conducted an unbiased, genome-scale forward genetic screen in C.
METTL17 is an Fe-S cluster checkpoint for mitochondrial translation
Highlights • The Fe-S proteome is destabilized when the synthesis of its cofactor is impaired • METTL17, a mitoribosome assembly factor, is depleted without Fe-S cluster biosynthesis • METTL17 binds a previously unrecognized [4Fe4S]2+ cluster • Overexpression of METTL17 rescues the bioenergetic defects of frataxin null cells Summary Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) is a debilitating, multisystemic disease caused by the depletion of frataxin (FXN), a mitochondrial iron-sulfur (Fe-S) cluster biogenesis...
Quick & Dirty: Madison McCreary on Nostalgic Themes That Inspired ‘Time + Tide’
Article Views: 3 Alternative folk artist Madison McCreary recently launched her nine-track album, Time + Tide, touching upon themes of dating, friendships, restlessness, and the complicated emotions that arise while being home for the holidays. Letter: Thank you, Minnesota legislators, for voting to raise the state's tobacco age
Letters Written By: Jason McCoy | May 28th 2020 - 11am. × I want to commend Sen. Kent Eken and Reps. Paul Marquart and Ben Lien for supporting the new Minnesota law that raises the state’s tobacco age to 21. Minnesota faces a growing epidemic of tobacco use and addiction among our young people. More than a quarter of 11th-graders reported using e-cigarettes in the past month, and even 8th-graders are using them at alarmingly high rates. Tobacco addiction starts at a young age.
My Inventions by Nikola Tesla and Jason McCoy
Nikola Tesla was a Serbian-American inventor, physicist, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and futurist. He is best known for his contributions to the modern alternating current (AC) electrical supply system, the successful system in the "War of Currents" and the Tesla coil. Nikolas Tesla's patents and theoretical work helped form the basis of wireless communication and radio.
Letter: Urge lawmakers to strengthen tobacco tax policy in Minnesota
In Minnesota, we are currently facing a youth nicotine epidemic, and tobacco use remains the leading cause of preventable death and disease. We need an all-hands-on-deck approach to reducing tobacco addiction, including preventing youth from starting and helping smokers quit. The number one most effective way to accomplish this goal is to keep tobacco prices high. One recent study found two-thirds of our state’s progress to reduce smoking in the last 25 years is due to tobacco price increases.
Letter: Yes, we should care if teens vape
The Forum recently published Rob Port’s column which asked, “Should we care if teens vape?” As a public health professional working with schools currently dealing with this crisis, the answer is a resounding "yes." Unfortunately, the author largely dismissed this rising health threat of youth nicotine addiction. We are better off heeding the advice of the nation’s top doctor.
Letter: Youth tobacco use has increased due to e-cigarettes
I've served as tobacco prevention coordinator at PartnerSHIP 4 Health for three years, and this is the first time I've seen an increase in teen tobacco products use. This increase is due to the rapid rise in e-cigarette use among young people in recent years.
Letter: One in four high schoolers now use tobacco products
I've served as tobacco prevention coordinator at PartnerSHIP 4 Health for three years and this is the first time I've seen an increase in teen tobacco products use.
Forget Russian hacking: Hillary’s mishandled emails cost her - Journal Inquirer: Other Commentary
Rhetoric and allegations related to Russian hacking that claim an impact on the U.S. presidential election misinterpret CIA intelligence statements. The premise leads to a false logical correlation. The statements touted are attributed to the CIA claim of illegal hacking, but the statement is only that there was hacking, not that it impacted the election. Countries hack each other all the time. There is no claim that there was tampering with voting.
Letter: A good rule for smoke-free public housing
While residents in publicly-owned housing in most Minnesota communities have some protections from secondhand smoke, this new rule means all Minnesota public housing residents will be protected from the dangers of secondhand smoke in their homes.Children make up about one-third of public housing residents — that's 760,000 children across the U.S. These kids will finally be protected from secondhand smoke where they live.Secondhand smoke is dangerous and can be deadly.
Letter: High tobacco price prevents kids from buying
North Dakota has some of the cheapest tobacco in the nation. Low on cash? You can always grab a cheap flavored cigar for $.79, or hey! Maybe they are on sale 2 for a dollar. The best way to keep tobacco out of the hands of kids is to make it too expensive.Price is king. It always has been. How many times have you switched brands to save a few bucks? We've raised our kids with those same values. If we can make a teen think twice before buying that first pack of smokes, aren't we doing something good?
Letter: High praise for new e-cig restrictions
"Minnesota recently passed a public health milestone. Just over 50 percent of Minnesotans are now protected from the harmful substances in secondhand e-cigarette aerosol in their hometowns. Clay and Wilkin counties are among the 30 cities and 21 counties in our state that have updated their policies to prohibit e-cigarette use wherever smoking is already prohibited.
