There’s an age, somewhere in the sixties, when a person begins to notice they’ve become harder to see. A hand reaches past them at the pharmacy shelf, for the exact thing they were about to pick up, as if the space they’re standing in were empty. They start a story at a family dinner and watch two phones come out around the table before they’ve reached the end of it. A stranger at the bank talks to them in that bright, slow, over-patient voice usually saved for small children. None of it is hostile.

When someone’s mother dies, the casseroles come. The neighbors, the cards, the coworkers who all sign the same one, the aunt who flies in. There’s a script, and everyone knows their part — you bring food, you say the thing, you show up in dark clothes. The casserole was never about the food — it’s the group agreeing, out loud, that something big happened and you shouldn’t have to carry it by yourself. There’s a whole other category of loss where none of that happens.

You’re sending a text about nothing. Moving a coffee to Thursday, or a one-line reply in the group chat. You type it out, read it back, and something about it isn’t right. Too eager. Too flat. The exclamation point makes you sound manic; no exclamation point makes you sound like you don’t care. You delete it, rewrite it, cut a word, and put the word back.
