Salem's Chestnut Street holds one of the densest concentrations of Federal-style architecture anywhere in the Northeast. Stockbridge anchors the southern Berkshires with the Red Lion Inn (a working hotel since 1773) and the Norman Rockwell Museum on the same block. Provincetown caps the outer Cape with the 252-foot Pilgrim Monument and an arts colony that traces back to 1899. Gloucester runs the oldest continuously operating commercial fishing port in the country, founded in 1623.

Four of the eight towns below sit in states with no state income tax (Florida, Tennessee) or with one of the more retiree-friendly tax codes in the country (South Carolina). Two are college towns built around major universities (Oxford and Charlottesville). One is a 130-year-old single-tax utopian colony that still operates the experiment today. The eight do not have much else in common beyond the geography.

Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-American Lutheran ministers from the Midwest as a folk school and farming colony.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be fair and objective. In most news stories, journalists are there to report the facts, not interject their opinions.

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist to put my life and culinary travels on paper. I love sharing stories about cultures and how food is the great unifier.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Stick with it. There are bumps in the road but as long as you have thick skin, you will make it through.
