Jatinder Hayre is an award winning essayist, and political journalist; with an interest in health inequalities, the social determinants of health and health system research. As well as this, he has engaged in popular publication in The Independent, City AM, Metro, The Tribune and Jacobin – amongst other media outlets. Jatinder is also a committed campaigner, sits on the board of The Fabian Society Think Tank, and is involved in Labour Party politics.

Parliament has decided how Britons may not die; it has yet to guarantee how we will. On Friday, MPs rejected Lauren Edwards's Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill at second reading by 286 votes to 270, ending, for now, the latest attempt to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales. As I watched the result, I thought about a sentence I have heard, in one form or another, from families at the bedside: "We wouldn't let the dog suffer like this." It is a brutal comparison.
