age 12+ Charming, sweet, but bland holiday romance. Parents need to know that What Light, by Jay Asher (Thirteen Reasons Why), is a light holiday romance involving a teen girl whose family owns a Christmas tree farm in Oregon. Sierra and her family move to California for the holiday season every year to sell trees. Because business is slowing, this might be their last year making the trip, which makes Sierra sad, especially after she meets the mysterious Caleb.
The Most Frequently Banned Books
Weekly Newsletter The best of The Saturday Evening Post in your inbox! Here we are again. On an almost annual basis, a firestorm surrounding the notion of books being banned reignites somewhere in America. The most frequent battlegrounds are public and school libraries, with the fields of engagement including venues like school board meetings and town halls. Such a recurring cycle poses two questions: what are the most frequently banned or challenged books in the United States, and why?
Review: Proel Eikon EKD9 Dynamic Microphone
If you are a singer, matching a microphone to your voice can be a learning experience. Fairly early on, I discovered that when recording my voice, I could get a more pleasing sound in a hurry with a $500 Electro-Voice RE20 than I could even with an expensive condenser, like a $4000 Neumann U-47. Although it is mostly commonly used as a broadcast mic, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, and Bob Dylan all have used the RE 20 on some of their records, so clearly, I am not alone in my love for it.
Synth and Software Review: Kirk Hunter’s Latest String Quintet Library
Lyric Series String Quintet, Kirk Hunter’s latest string library, is designed to do one thing very well – play musical melody lines. But it also covers the basics too. Lyric Series String Quintet consists of seven instruments and five multis: 3 violins, 1 viola, 2 Celli, 4 string quartets, and 1 string quintet. Each instrument has seven basic articulations: long, tremolo, half step trill, whole step trill, spiccato, pizzicato, and harmonics.

Spitfire Audio Symphonic Motions Review
Looking for something that will make your sampled string tracks sound more realistic than ever? If you’re in the market for a symphonic sample library that does most everything you need, excellent choices abound. That’s especially true of string sections. Nonetheless, it’s difficult for general-purpose libraries to capture certain nuances of real players in a string section. That’s why you should investigate virtual instruments that perform specific musical tasks.

Review: Apogee Clearmountain's Domain Plugins
When notification of the availability of Apogee’s new Clearmountain’s Domain multi-FX plug-in arrived in my email box, my first thought was, OK Apogee, what do I need this for? I have great plug-ins up the wazoo, and I am not impressed when celebrity engineers are attached to products (OK, maybe I am a little.) So why did I decide to proceed and check it out? In a word, curiosity.
Review: EastWest Hollywood Pop Brass
When I first heard EastWest was releasing a Hollywood Pop Brass library I was really excited, as I am a big fan of the Hollywood Series. For pop brass, I have relied on a library comprised of soloists and it is good, but doesn't have a lot of bite and is time consuming to use as well. So I had high hopes this would eliminate the need for it. Well, does it? Maybe. If you buy the concept, I think you will buy the execution. What Is It?
Review: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher
Review: Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher 20th Mar 2011 Jess @ Gone with the Words Book Reviews How many of you have known someone who’s committed suicide? A classmate, friend, relative? I can think of 3. Two classmates and a friend’s younger sister. I wasn’t close to any of them, I was friendly with them, said hello or goodbye when I passed them in the halls, maybe had a drink with them at a party, but I wouldn’t have called them my friends.
Review: Venice Modern Strings
I know, I know I swore I would never review another strings library, and honestly, I meant it. But when one of my favorite developers, Fluffy Audio, announced their new strings library and I heard some demos I simply had to go in to the water for a dip. And boy, am I glad that I did! What Is It? Venice Modern Strings is a 55 GB 24 bit/48 kHz Kontakt library, and a full version of Kontakt 5.8.1 or higher is required. The best way to download it is with the free Pulse software.
Review: The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler
Review: The Future of Us by Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler 21st Nov 2011 Jess @ Gone with the Words Book Reviews There was so much I loved about this book! The nostalgia, for one, could not have been a more pleasant feeling. I loved reading about all those bands I love from the 90s!! What’s funny is that our girl Emma really loved Dave Matthew’s Band, which is probably the one band I could never really get into, lol. The boy-next-door/childhood-best-friend love interest that is Josh.

Review: VSL Synchron Player
The VSL libraries have always had big fans and big detractors because of their sound. They were famously recorded on a “Silent Stage” and for me the sound was clinical and sterile. Many others however loved them, especially those who liked the driest possible sound. But apparently enough people felt as I did so now VSL has embarked on another approach as well, recording on the Synchron Stage in Vienna. This is a wonderful sounding room and the libraries sound very different.
Orchestration Tips:
When I moved to Los Angeles many years ago, I realized that I had a gap in my musical education, which was orchestration. So I decided to study it with a renowned orchestrator - the late, great Dr. Albert Harris. I became convinced that he had in his inner ear a complete knowledge of the sound of every combination of instruments possible.

Author Of ‘Thirteen Reasons Why’ Is Suing Over Harassment Allegations
By Jamie Samhan. 12 mins ago David Livingston/Getty Images Author of the best-selling novel Thirteen Reasons Why, Jay Asher, is filing a defamation lawsuit. The author of the novel that became a hit Netflix series is claiming that his career, family, and reputation were all damaged over allegations that he harassed women.
Review: Cinematic Studio Brass
When Cinematic Studio Strings was released, I found that much to my surprise, it became perhaps my favorite sampled strings library, just when I thought I didn’t need another strings library. Well, they did it again, and it certainly will take its place among my “go to” brass libraries. What Is It? Cinematic Studio Brass is a Kontakt Player library, so a full version of Kontakt is not required.
Review: Amadeus Symphonic Orchestra
What if I told you that for $149 you could buy a complete sampled orchestra that includes solo instruments, ensemble instruments, ensemble orchestral sections (some large, some small) and a playable full “Symphony” patch, and even choir, guitars and taikos, and that it would only take up 10 GB of hard drive space and run in the free Kontakt player that works in any DAW? You would probably say, “OK, but I bet it sounds pretty awful.” But it doesn’t.

6 MIDI Tricks & Features in Logic Pro X You May Not Know
1. MIDI Is Being Recorded Even When You Are Not In Record Here is the scenario: you load up a software instrument, hit play, and start improvising. Somewhere along the line you think to yourself, “Oh man, that was great! Why oh why was I not in record to capture it?” Guess what, in a sense, you were, thanks to a feature called Capture Recording. There are a couple of ways to access this feature. You can add it to the Control Bar as you see in the next two pics.
Smart Tempo in Logic Pro X 10.4.2 - Get Perfect Timing Without A Click
Smart Tempo was a revolutionary feature introduced with Logic Pro X 10.4, but it only worked with audio, not with MIDI parts played with software instruments. Now however in 10.4.2, it works with MIDI too and for me and other composers who like to play freely without a click, this is a game changer. In the past if I wanted to record for example a piano part freely and then later have a tempo reference to add other instrumental parts, I had to use Logic’s Beat Mapping.
Challenged Books in Iowa: Banned Books Week 2018
Free societies read freely! The ACLU of Iowa is dedicated to preserving our First Amendment to decide for ourselves what we read, view, and hear—a fundamental element of free speech and expression. Banned Books Week is observed annually in late September to celebrate the First Amendment and draw attention to the censorship of literature in public schools.
Petalumans celebrate the right to read
It’s September, which means schools are in session, paper and pens are selling at a higher rate than during the summer, and National Banned Books Week is about to be celebrated. “Simply put,” says Ray Lawrason, assistant manager of Petaluma’s Copperfield’s Book Store, “a banned book is a book that someone doesn’t want you to read.
Removing censorship from books
Jessica Enget grew up in a house that was very liberal with what could be read. That’s why Enget, who is now executive director of Lincoln Township Public Library, said she was surprised to discover she had already read a significant amount of banned books by the time she reached high school.“Libraries are all about access to information and leveling the playing field for everybody,” she said.
Review: Embertone Walker 1955 Steinway D
I seem to be reviewing a lot of products that I did not think I needed. Another sampled piano? Ho-hum, I have good ones up the wazoo, what do I need another for? The answer is because this one is damned good, featuring maybe the nicest tone I have heard. I have several libraries from Embertone and generally like their efforts so my mind was open to listening and what I heard in the demos on their website impressed me. Embertone sampled a 9 foot vintage Steinway D.
Review: Apogee MIC Plus

Review: Best Service Celtic Era
As I said in a review of one of his other libraries, Eduardo Tarilonte is one of my very favorite developers. His libraries are beautifully recorded, emotional, and simply do not sound like anyone else’s. Celtic Era is the most recent release and it is gorgeous. Even the descriptions are colorful, in this case ”When druids of the Highlands ask for a dance” and “the sound of Nordic myths.” Celtic Era is an 18 GB Best Service Engine library, which uses the very stable free Engine player.
EQ Shootout: Logic Pro 10.4 Vintage EQs VS UAD Emulations
I am a huge fan of the plug-ins from Universal Audio and also their DSP cards and interfaces which have been a large part of how I make my music sound the way I want it to for years. The only downside is that they induce latency into a project in a way that native plug-ins do not, so I end up having to wait till the final mix to add some of them. When Logic Pro X 10.4 was released and featured three new “Vintage EQs” it caught my attention.
Do You Make These Virtual Instrument & Audio Plugin Buying Mistakes?
Sample library and virtual instruments development has been going on for a long time now, and we have a lot of talented developers who are utilizing the increased power of today’s computers and Solid State drives (SSD) to create ever bigger and more demanding sample libraries and virtual instruments. But is the music being made with them actually sounding better?
Thirteen Reasons Why Author Jay Asher Accused of Sexual Harassment

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators announced on Monday that it had banned Asher last year after an internal investigation found he violated the society’s harassment code, though it did not give specifics.
The "13 Reasons Why" author has been expelled from his writing organization for harassment
It appears 13 Reasons Why‘s graphic content isn’t the only controversy linked to the Netflix adaptation. Author Jay Asher, who wrote the original novel the teen drama is based on, was reportedly expelled from a writers association he belonged to due to sexual harassment allegations. The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators actually kicked the 13 Reasons Why author out last year but, in the #MeToo era, the news is just coming to light.
Thirteen Reasons Why Author Jay Asher Denies Accusation of Harassment
Jay Asher, the author of the 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why that became a hit Netflix series, has been expelled from a prominent writers society amid allegations of harassment. Asher’s ban occurred sometime last year after he allegedly violated the organization’s harassment code, Lin Oliver, executive director of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, told the Associated Press on Monday.

Put Your Logic Pro X Workflow on Steroids
Every once in a while someone will alert me to a YouTube video and say, “Hey Jay, check out Famous Producer X working with Famous Artist X in Logic Pro.” Almost invariably, I want to smash the computer screen because while they may be really talented, their workflow is so inefficient! Here are some tips to prevent this from happening to you. My motto is pretty much “Never do with mouse dragging with what you can do with a keystroke.” Here is an example.
Review: EastWest Hollywood Choirs
Hollywood Choirs is a sample library available in all the popular formats that uses EW’s proprietary engine, Play. In fact it requires a new Play 6 version that is free with the purchase and for Composer Cloud subscribers. Others will pay $29.99. It has two sets of instruments, Women and Men. Unlike the Symphonic Choirs, there is no real way to totally separate sopranos from altos and tenors from basses.
10 Reasons To Upgrade From GarageBand To Logic Pro X

'13 Reasons Why' author Jay Asher of SLO to release graphic novel | The Tribune
A creepy legend comes to life in the latest book from the best-selling author of “Thirteen Reasons Why.” Jay Asher, whose book about a suicidal teen inspired the hit Netflix series “13 Reasons Why,” revisits the story of the Pied Piper of Hameln in his first-ever graphic novel. Co-written with Jessica Freeburg and illustrated by Jeff Stokely, “Piper” is a dark tale of romance and revenge set in medieval Germany — just like the original story.
Review: Cinematic Studio Solo Strings
Several years ago, a new strings library by a new developer appeared on the scene: Cinematic Strings 2. While I never owned it, I got enough hands-on experience to reach the conclusion that while it did not have as many articulations as the ones I favored for my personal use, for many of my Logic Pro clients it would be a better choice. It had a big lush sound right out of the box, small learning curve, inexpensive price, and worked with the free Kontakt player.
Go Button 3 from Figure 53 : Ask.Audio
A couple of months ago, I decided that I wanted to get out and perform the songs from my new album live, singing and playing my main keyboard part live with mixes of the tracks from it sans those two elements from an iPad. It quickly became apparent to me that the iOS Music app was not well suited for someone to perform live with tracks, pausing to talk to the audience between songs, balancing levels, adding fade ins and fade outs, etc.

10 Strange But Interesting Musical History Facts
The London Symphony Orchestra was originally booked to perform on the Titanic on its maiden voyage, but they ended up on another boat at the last minute. That surely would have been worse than London Bridge falling down! Yes, it is an actual place, New York City, and the side streets of Times Square. So many music publishers were hawking their songs on crappy “tinny” pianos that it got this nickname, and it stuck.
