SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – Everyone is talking about Artificial Intelligence and how it can improve our lives. That includes the weather. While AI doesn’t create weather, it can help forecast it. The atmosphere is turbulent and sometimes chaotic. For decades forecasters have relied on supercomputers applying physics formulas with the ironic name “Primitive equations” for mathematical guidance in preparing our forecasts.

Record- or near-record highs Saturday: Storm Center PM Update – Friday, March 20

We expect to finish today and tomorrow with some new record high temperatures for the date. A pool of hot air centered over the SW United States is pushing hot, dry air our way. Overnight we’ll have clear to partly cloudy skies. It will be exceptionally mild, with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s. Those temperatures aren’t too far from our normal high temperatures this time of year. Saturday will be the peak of the current heat wave.

Record heat coming: Storm Center PM Update – Thursday, March 19

It’s another day of warming across KELOLAND, with temperatures much above normal for the last day of Winter. After morning fog east of the James River valley burned off, temperatures immediately started rising. Tonight skies will be clear to partly cloudy. Temperatures will be mild, and we’ll continue to melt remaining snow overnight due to lows in the mid 30 to low 40s in eastern KELOLAND, and the 40s West River.
