Peer Review Resources for Authors and Reviewers
Peer review is the cornerstone of academic writing and publishing. That means most scholars will inevitably experience being on both the giving and receiving end of reviewer comments. Despite this commonality, many aspects of the process can be confusing and misunderstood. We’ve gathered some of our favorite peer review resources to shed some light on this scholarly practice and how we can make it better.
Peer Review During a Pandemic
The world of academic publishing is experiencing a peer review crisis. Scholars, especially those on the academic job market and on the tenure track, are desperate to get their work reviewed and published. But peer reviewers, on which scholarly publishing depends, are overwhelmed and exhausted. Manuscripts are languishing for months as journal and press editors seek reviewers. Some of my colleagues report asking more than a dozen potential reviewers before finding anyone who can do it.
Ways to End Grateful Guest Syndrome
There’s an old Korean saying that goes along the lines of, “A guest in your house, like a fish, starts to smell after three or four days.” This saying pungently captures how quickly a once welcomed visitor can become an unwanted nuisance. Once the newness of a visitor starts to wear off, the things that made them an interesting novelty—the different things they like to eat, the new ideas they bring to conversation, simply the way they break up your daily routine—become annoyances.
What to Do with Unfinished Summer Writing
The shortest summer in the history of academia has just ended. If you’re like me, less got done than usual and what did get done is less finished and less polished than you had hoped. In our current, unpredictable pandemic environment, it’s likely that the year ahead will provide even fewer opportunities for sustained research and writing, while added distractions and stress are practically guaranteed. For me, this anxious end-of-summer feeling long pre-dated COVID.

North Alabama schools preparing for auto growth
ATHENS, Ala. (AP) — With the promise of growth from a new Toyota-Mazda plant and its support industries, city and county schools in north Alabama will have to be able to handle more students. The heads of school systems in Athens and Limestone County believe they are either ready to handle more students or can get ready when the time comes. “We are covered for the next 10 years for average growth,” said Athens City Schools Superintendent Trey Holladay.

Academic Mentoring: How to Find a Good Mentor
Finding a good mentor is as much a skill as being a good mentor is. It takes patience, diligence, trial, and error. Academia can be an isolating place, and building strong mentoring relationships can shape your graduate school and early faculty experience as well as impact the overall course of your career. Sometimes these connections emerge organically, but more often than not, finding mentors who can provide insight, support, and advice in key moments takes legwork.
