Fears for school children aren't new, they just change shape
The political cartoon in Monday's (June 6) Tulsa World paper showing a small child carrying an enormous backpack laden with worry and stress is gut wrenching and heartbreaking. It's all so sadly true. It reminded me of when I was in elementary school in Wichita, Kansas, in the 1950s - post WWII. Wichita was considered an inland target for nuclear war due to the multiple aircraft manufacturing facilities in the city. So the Board of Education's answer was to teach all school children how to be safe.

Sun Chemical v. Fike: NJ Product Liability Act Claims Can Be Paired With NJ Consumer Fraud Act Claims | JD Supra
The New Jersey Supreme Court recently ruled that claims under the New Jersey Consumer Fraud Act (“NJCFA”) relating to the sale of a product are not per se subsumed by the New Jersey Product Liability Act (“NJPLA”). The Supreme Court’s opinion therefore leaves open the possibility that a defendant who engages in fraudulent practices in connection with the sale of a product could face a NJCFA claim, a NJPLA claim, or both.

Avoid the 'relocation clause' horror story
When it comes to dental leases, we've heard plenty of horror stories. Here's one we frequently hear about relocation clauses—which are notorious troublemakers. What follows is a paraphrased version of one dentist's story. I have a relocation clause in my lease. Now the landlord is exercising that right. The landlord is moving me to another space in the same building because he just leased a major part of the building to a large tenant.
True dental fraud: The lake house
Paul, old man, how long has it been? Oh my gosh, Bill. It’s been ages! It's a familiar scenario: Two friends reconnect at a dental convention, share a few stories, and decide to meet again. In just a few months, Bill found himself at Paul’s lake house for a "fishing trip," laughing and telling tall tales with four other guests. Paul’s lake house was unbelievable. It looked like something out of a magazine and was perched on one of the most amazing lake lots Bill had ever seen.
Behind the Fraud Triangle: Understanding the origins of embezzlement in dental practices
The second component of the Fraud Triangle is justification. This is where the embezzler “reframes” his (or her) activity to become consistent with his self-image. This version of the events becomes not that he is doing something wrong, but rather that he is doing something necessary because it is deserved—or very commonly just a temporary borrowing that will be paid back.
The collateral damage of employee fraud
In 2010, I worked on a case for Specialty Components Inc. (not its real name) in northwest Ohio (not its real location), which suffered a loss from employee theft of $170,000 (this part is real—at least it is the amount we could prove). For the most part, it was a routine case: suspicion, initial evidence gathering, law enforcement involvement, interview, investigation, and resolution.
